لن يدرك المجد من لا جد في الطلب

وما عزيز الحمى والجار غير أبي

Glory is unattainable by one who lacks diligence in seeking it,

No kinsman or neighbor is dearer to me than my father,

إن كنت اهوي بأفعالي إلى سفل

فليس ينفعني يوماً علو أبي

If my actions lead me downhill,

My father's nobility will never benefit me one day,

إن الفتى من سعى جداً بهمته

إلى المعالي ولم يكسل ولم يهب

The young man who strives diligently with his ambition,

Seeking the heights, never lazy or faltering,

من طبعه العجز لم تنجح مطالبه

لو كان ذا نسبٍ وفرٍ وذا حسب

Whose nature is not that of weakness, his requests will succeed,

Even if he has lineage, wealth, and repute,

ومن غدا بنطاق الحزم محتجزاً

واستمطأ العزم فعلاً فاز بالأرب

And whoever girds himself with the belt of resolve

And affirms the will, he will gain the top places,

والمرؤ ذكر وخير الناس أوسعهم

حلماً وأرجاهموا نفعاص لدى النوب

And the ideal person has mention and the best of people is the most clement,

And the most dignified at times of distress.
