عن العادات لا تنبو الطباع

وما يصل العلى إلا الشجاع

Habits do not foretell nature

And nothing reaches the heights except the brave

وما تهوى الغواني غير شهمٍ

بخشية باسه تحمى البقاع

And nothing is craved by the beautiful women except a gallant man

With a sword that makes the lands glow in awe

تمنع للمعالي عن هواها

وكيف يطيعه وهو المطاع

It prevents the sublime from its desires

And how can it obey while it reigns supreme

اذا ما خامل بالخود يلهو

فملهاه الأسنة واليراع

When it toys with the cheeks in tranquility

Its amusement becomes the tongues and the wrists

يقبل صفحتي سيفٍ صقيلٍ

ويثنيه عن الخمر القراع

It meets the pages of a polished sword

And it bends it away from the wine cup

صليل السيف اطرب من سماع

وأمر السيف اسرع ما يطاع

The clinking of the sword is more delightful than hearing

And the command of the sword is the fastest to be obeyed

وما كل الغواني مثل ليلي

ولا كل القلوب به التياع

And not all beautiful women are like Layla

Nor are all hearts smitten by passion for her

أليلى ما لأهلك أسلموك

ومثلك لا يعار ولا يباع

Oh Layla why did your people hand you over

The likes of you are not lent or sold

رأوا تقليد علي الله حتا

لعمري انهم ضلوا وضاعوا

They saw my devotion to God as an affectation

By my life they went astray and got lost

إذا سميت يا ليلي إيزيبلا

فللإسلام قد حان الوداع

While you have no unity or gathering

وانتم لا ضياء ولا شعاع

O sons of Adnan, nations became enlightened

While you have no illumination or radiance

تركتم لغة القرآن تعفى

وفي إحياءها لكم ارتفاع

You neglected the language of the Quran in disuse

And in reviving it lies your ascendance

صبأتم للرطانه وهي تيه

به للدين والوطن الضياع

You were devoted to prattle which leads

The religion and homeland to loss

تقولون التمدن يقتضيها

كذبتم ايها الهمج الرعاع

You claim civilization necessitates it

You have lied, o vulgar riffraff

ألا إن التمدن صرف فكر

وجد في الصناعة واختراع

Know that civilization is focused thought

Found in industry and invention

وحرث الأرض زرعاً ثم غرساً

وحفظ الأمن والشرع المطاع

And farming the land, planting it

And maintaining security and obeyed law
