    Spend the holiday playing games,

While I spent my holiday with cannons.

There is no difference between us, O children,

In toys that fly like iron missiles.

The difference between us is that I see

What you did not see of tremors and armies.

I know the shelling you did not know about,

And I know the scream of threats.

The difference is that I do not sleep when

My night grows dark, while your night passes in slumber.

My holiday morning is a bullet,

While you celebrate with a toy and money.

If a thorn pricked a child, your fathers

Would not rest until a thousand bandages.

While I walk bloodied, bandaging my wounds

    With ties and veins.

O children, I am like you,

A child whose dreams I watered roses.

Do you have candy? I did not find

Except half a loaf for worms.

Do you laugh and play? I spend my day

    With my confusion and wandering.
