يلومني قومي على حبها

واللوم لا يجدى ولا ينفع

My people blame me for loving her,

But blame does not help or avail.

يرمونني بالضعف لكنهم

لم يجرعوا الكاس التي أجرع

They accuse me of weakness, but they

Have not tasted the cup I have tasted.

وما دروا أن الهوى قاهر

قضاؤه في الناس لا يدفع

They know not that passion is mighty,

Its decree in people cannot be stopped.

ولا رأوا أسطر هجرانها

تخطها في خدى الأدمع

They saw not the lines of her abandonment

That grief etched on my cheek.

ولا رأوني في ظلام الدجى

وقد نبا عن جسمي المضجع

They saw me not in the darkness of night

When insomnia drove away my sleep.

أبث لليل هوى خالداً

والليل لا يحنو ولا يسمع

I confide to the night an undying love,

But the night does not sympathize or hear.

أردد الأشعار في جوفه

كطائر في سجنه يسجع

I recite poems in its expanse

Like a bird singing dolefully in its cage.

أعلل النفس بنيل المنا

والصب بالآمال لا يقنع

I console my soul with hopes of union,

But youth is not satisfied with hopes.

إني فتى لم يدر طعم الكرى

إن يهجع الموتور لا يهجع

I am a lad who has not known deception,

If the lovelorn sleeps, he does not sleep.

وإن شدا البلبل في دوحه

يذوب وجداً قلبه الموجع

And if the nightingale wails in its branches,

It melts with passion - its aching heart.
