ـت حماك في اليوم العصيب

O mother I have come knocking

At your tent on the fateful day

أبكى على سعدى كما

يبكى الغريب على الغريب

I cry over my bliss as

A stranger cries over a stranger

يمضى الصباح ولست أعـ

ـلم منه أسرار الغروب

Morning passes and I do not

Know from it the secrets of sunset

بئس الحياة إذا جهل

ناكنه ذا الكون العجيب

Miserable is life when one is ignorant

Of the mysteries of this wondrous universe

إن المصائب ريشة

تلهو بأوتار القلوب

Afflictions are feathers

That play with the strings of hearts

أفنى الغرام تجلدي

وفقدت في أهلى طبيبي

Passion has exhausted my endurance

And I have lost in my family a healer

هذا جناه أبي علـ

ـى وما جنيت على حبيب

This I owe to my father

Yet I have not wronged my beloved
