    Man opened his eyes and said:

    I see no tracks of my child in the sand.

    Where has he gone—where, O sun—and can

    the shadows shield him from the blaze of your eyes?

    Where has he gone—where, O wind—and do

    the mountains shelter him when you rage?

    Where has he gone—where? O clouds, halt,

    and listen to his long songs.

    صرخة الطائر تدميه الحبال

    For he is the sea’s voice, keeping vigil over

    the cry of the bird whom the ropes make bleed;

    نسمات من سراب وخيال

    and the wasteland’s trembling; his heart was touched by

    breezes of mirage and imagination;

    قلبه البركان قد غنّى ومال

    and the swaying of the drunken mountain, in

    whose heart the volcano sang and swayed;

    قدم الكلب على عنق الغزال

    and the distant planet’s shudder when it saw

    the dog’s paw upon the gazelle’s neck;

    and the enslaved man’s cry as he plunged into the fire,

    embracing his heavy black shackles.

    And Man fell asleep, save for a candle

    that dawn made burn brighter, blaze upon blaze.

    And by its red lights walked

    that child of celestial beauty,

    bearing a wreath of blossoms whose like no bough

    upon those hills had ever borne.

    And when his shadows interlaced

    with dawn’s shadows, he cast it down and said:

    The people carried hopes, just as

    ants carried a stalk of straw.

    Rain down, O clouds, for you shall never

    erase their tracks upon the sand.
