The wind roared and the sky darkened,
The crescent hid looking askance.
The light was erased except for some lines
Dawn had drawn them but they could not be read.
Lightning flashed, a faint ray of light
Ripping through the darkness with bursts.
Thunder rumbled with warnings of affliction
And the waves surged back and forth.
The elements of the universe called for revolt
And lightning bolts rained down as embers.
The winds raced in the arena of the horizon
And evening came as the winds howled.
It taught us that nature is a mother
Alas! A mother's wailing is ruinous.
O mute mother, if you speak to us
Your talk overflows with fear and alarm.
Your whisper is thunder, lightning your murmur
Volcanoes your moan that kindles concern.
O mother you were given a thousand tongues
Yet you keep the secret, you do not divulge it.
O mother, how can you hide from us
The maker of oceans and land in your folds?
How can you hide the father from his children
When a father's affection is best?
Is it true, O mother, that my father is like me
In form, and fills the universe with righteousness?!
So answer me, a mother's duty is to introduce
Her children to a father mighty and dignified.
Tell me: did God secretly reside in your home?
The home's dweller knows best.
Oh I lost Him and lost my hope
So guide me to Him, you will gain reward.
She replied: I search for Him
I do not see Him, Glory be to Him, where did He alight?
I said: Come now! She frowned
And showed me the scowl on her face.
She pointed to the storms, go!
And take heed of His earth however it rages.
So we fled from her in anger
And took refuge behind a boulder.
We saw the waves storming the shore
Blind armies attacking again and again.
How many homes crumbled and palaces
The raging winds made into graves.
From the shelters, each croucher prostrated
No face whitened, no chest sighed.
And there were trees swaying dejected
Whether small or large all keeled over.
A revolt in nature swept the land
As the desert tribes swept the kingdom of Persia.
I found no rescuer, so I called out to a Lord
His servants worshiped in the world age after age.
None hear me but I cry His name
Secretly and openly in existence.
Nature’s revolt subsided and the winds
Calmed in the air walking steadily.
We saw that which it demolished
Was meant by the demise to renew.
These storms are hands
What they destroy right they build left.
Messengers of life and rebirth, indeed life
Whenever nature willed turned bleak to vivid.
If only we built from these “storms”
Ships to stir the universes spreading and unfurling.
To see everything ruinous and barren
Crumble and fall with no benefit.
From our traditions and from every custom
Opinions made religion or blasphemy.
These storms are axes
Breaking the towering back after back.
Since old, man was busy pondering
“Things” preoccupied him age after age.
What he saw as knowledge yesterday
He sees today as ignorance, thus time passed.
His views are most like waves
Coming in succession, the new erases the old.
Thought delved into contemplation until
The light of day peered through the gloom.
It seemed to me nature rejoiced
At what it ruined until it settled.
Alas, O mother, if you want prosperity
Sweep the universe clean with storms.
