وغابَ الصدقُ عنّا فانتهينا

كأنّ الصدقَ في الدنيا حرامُ

Truthfulness has left us, so we are finished

As if truthfulness in life is forbidden

تناءينا فماتَ الوصلُ حُزناً

ويا قلبي على اللُقيا السلامُ

We have parted, so companionship has died of sorrow

And oh my heart, farewell to acquaintances

فوا أسفي على من كان يوماً

صديقاً، ثمّ ضيّعَهُ الزحامُ

Alas for those who were once

Friends, but whom crowds made strangers

كظِلٍ في النهارِ أراهُ قُربي

ويهجُرني إذا حلّ الظلامُ

Like a shadow by day I see them near

Yet by night's darkness estranged they remain
