1. خذ أماناً منَ الشعاع المُقيّدْ

    فهوَ في القيدِ جمرةٌ تتوقدْ

    Take safety from the shackled ray

    For bound, it is an ember glowing red

  2. أو فَذقْ منْ شُواظِهِ الحُرّ

    فأنت المقيّدُ المستعبَدْ

    Or taste its unleashed fervor

    You are the shackled, enslaved one instead

  3. ذُق شُواظاً لو مسّه صاهرُ الأغْـ

    ـلال أضحى بناره يتعبّدْ

    Taste fervor, if but touched by the smelter of pearls

    His fire becomes worship, spreading ahead

  4. من حواشي الرخام يسطعُ للأحْـ

    ـرار ديناً يهدي العباد ويُرشد

    From marble edges it shines for the passionate

    A faith guiding worshippers, showing the lead

  5. هو نورٌ لكنّه في ظلام السجن

    نارٌ على القيود تعربد

    It is light, but in the prison's darkness

    A fire on chains raging, frothing ahead

  6. مِلءُ ذرّاتِهِ أناشيدُ مجدٍ

    بصداها مُحرّر النيل أنشد

    Its particles are songs of glory

    At their voices the freed Nile sang

  7. ذرّةٌ تُرعب الحديد على الصمْـ

    ـت وأخرى في الهول تُرغي وتُزبِد

    A particle that terrifies iron in silence

    Another in awfulness seethes and foams ahead

  8. غلّلتهُ بالأمس كفٌّ ضلولٌ

    تنصرُ البغيَ بالحسام المجرّد

    Yesterday, wandering hands had shackled it

    Backing tyranny with the bared blade

  9. شدّ طُغيانها عتيٌّ منَ الغرْ

    ب على النيل كم طغى وتمرّد

    The blindness of the West tightened its grip

    On the Nile, usurping, transgressing instead

  10. ملّكَتْهُ والملكُ لله دنيا

    ظلُّها عاجل الفناء مُبدّد

    It crowned itself, though to God belongs all reign

    Its shadow soon disappearing, scattered ahead

  11. فمضى في مسابح الشرق كالأقْـ

    ـدار يُشقى كما يَشاء ويُسعِد

    So it roamed the Nile's streams like planets

    Tormented as it pleased, enriching some, impoverishing others ahead

  12. كم عدا فاتكاً وأحكم أغلا

    لاً عليها الرقاب في الشرق تشهد

    How many lands it raided and fettered

    Necks in the East that testify ahead

  13. في فلسطين ظُلمه أقلق الدنْـ

    ـيا وما هزّهُ الصراخ المردّد

    In Palestine its injustice disrupted the world

    But it paid no heed to cries echoed ahead

  14. وعلى مصر كم أذلّ وأردى

    وتمطّى على النجوم وهدّد

    And in Egypt how it degraded and ruined

    Leaping at the stars, threatening ahead

  15. عبقريٌّ في الختل يُدمي ويرتدّ

    على الجرح باكياً يتوجّد

    A genius in decadence, wounding, recoiling

    Weeping at the wound, discovering instead

  16. كم سقى النيل من ضرواته الهوْ

    نَ وعيشاً من المذّلة أنكد

    How much the Nile was made to drink of its wrongs

    And sustenance bitterness that it swallowed ahead

  17. وتمادى فكنت يا مصطفى الهوْ

    ل على هوله تثور وتُرعد

    It carried on until you, O Mustafa, arose

    Against its horror, raging, thundering ahead

  18. في غباء السنين والنيل مغفٍ

    وبنوهُ من سكرة الضيم هُجّد

    In the foolishness of years, the Nile forgot

    And its people drugged with oppression ahead

  19. قمت كالعاصف المجلجل تجتا

    ح فلا تنثني ولا تتردّد

    You rose like the raging, thunderous storm

    Marching ahead, never wavering or drawing back instead

  20. تلبس القيد من جنانك قيداً

    حزّهُ في الحديد نقشٌ مخلّد

    You donned the fetter from your heavens a fetter

    Carved in iron an immortal inscription ahead

  21. هتفاتٌ بحبّ مصر وموتٌ

    في هواها ونشوةٌ وتعبّد

    Chants of your love for Egypt and death

    In her passion, rapture and worship ahead

  22. وصلاةٌ بمجدها كنت فيها الْـ

    ـعابد الصبّ والشواطيء معبد

    And a prayer for her glory - you were in it

    The fervent worshipper, shores and banks sanctified ahead

  23. وذيادٌ عن حرمة الوطن الشا

    كي بعزمٍ كنيلهِ ليس ينفد

    And zeal for the homeland’s sanctity

    With a will like its Nile, never exhausted ahead

  24. ودفاعٌ عن الحمى كنت فيه

    ما لغير الحمى تروم وتقصد

    And a defense of the protected - you were in it

    Seeking no other protected land instead

  25. فارسٌ في قتامة النيل تمضي

    بشهابٍ من السماء مؤيّد

    A knight in the Nile's darkness you marched on

    With a flame from the heavens providing aid ahead

  26. مِشعلٌ في يديك شرّد بالأضْـ

    ـواء جُنحاً على الشواطيء أربد

    A torch in your hand that startled wings

    In the skies, on the banks fluttering ahead

  27. كنت تسري به فتنهض فانيْـ

    ـن عليهم شيخوخة اليأس تقعد

    You carried it on and the despairing arose

    Old age upon them seated ahead

  28. بضياءٍ من الهدى أنعش الشر

    ق وطرف الزمان في مصر أرمدْ

    With the light of guidance you revived the East

    And the edge of time in Egypt rotting ahead

  29. وبيانٍ كأنه لهب البرْ

    كان تختار جمره وتنضّد

    And with eloquence like the lightning’s flame

    You chose its embers and stoked ahead

  30. كلُّ لفظٍ من الصراحة سهمٌ

    في حشا الغاصبين ماضٍ مسدّد

    Each frank word an arrow

    To the arrogant’s breasts unerring, targeted ahead

  31. هاتِ لي من صداهُ نبراً لعلّي

    أنفثُ النار من صدايَ المغرد

    Give me from its echo a tone so I may

    Breathe fire from my warbling melody ahead

  32. هاته فالجحود واراه في سجْـ

    ـنٍ على شاطيء الليالي مشرّد

    Bring it to me though forgetfulness discarded it

    In a prison on the banks of nights scattered ahead

  33. في زوايا النسيان قبرٌ وذكرٌ

    ورخامٌ في الصمت لهفانُ مكمد

    In corners of oblivion, a grave and a memory

    And marble in silence, yearning, extinguished ahead

  34. كاد ينضو الأستار عنه وينعي

    أنا رمز الفخار يا نيل فاشهد

    The curtains almost uncovered it and lamented

    I am the symbol of clay, O Nile, so bear witness ahead

  35. أنا علّمتك الوثوب على القيْـ

    ـد وعلّمتني الأسى والتنهد

    I taught you revolt against the fetter

    And you taught me grief and sighing ahead

  36. ما الذي في الضفاف نسّاك روحا

    ذاق من أجلك الردى واستشهد

    What on the banks made you forget, O spirit

    That tasted for your sake torment and martyrdom ahead

  37. أشيوخٌ على الكراسيّ هاجوا

    وهيَ من هزلهم تميد وترْعدْ

    Are they elders on chairs who aroused

    And swayed from their jesting, quivering ahead

  38. أم شبابٌ على ترابك يمشي

    حول ساقيْهِ كالأسير المصفّد

    Or youths walking on your soil

    Like chained prisoners ahead

  39. خانعٌ في حماك ينتظر البعْـ

    ـث ليمضي إلى الأمام وينهد

    Submissive in your protection, waiting for salvation

    To march ahead and sigh ahead

  40. علّموهُ والرزق في مصرَ رهنٌ

    برجاءٍ وذلّةٍ وتودّد

    You taught them, though livelihood in Egypt

    Depends on pleading, humiliation and fawning ahead

  41. كيف يلقي بعزمه تحت نعليْـ

    ـهِ وفي الذلّ يستنيمُ ويرقد

    How can he cast his will beneath their slippers

    And in humiliation slumber and lie ahead

  42. ما الذي في الضفاف نسّاك يا نيلُ

    هوى ذلك الشعاع المقيّد

    What on the banks made you forget, O Nile

    The passion for that shackled ray ahead

  43. فمنحت التمثال شِبراً عليه

    تائهُ الدود في البلى يتمرّدْ

    So you granted the statue a span upon which

    Worms rebel in decay ahead

  44. وحرمتَ الجهاد فجراً من النور

    يُهدي إلى علاكَ ويُرشِدْ

    And denied the dawn of light

    To guide your ascent, showing the lead ahead
