1. جَدَثٌ بمدرجة الرياح مُعفّرُ

    البُومُ ضَيفُ تُرابِه والقُبَّرُ

    A demolished temple in which wisdom lines

    Were inscribed, now covered by years

  2. ذَاوِي الرُّسومِ مِنَ الْبلى فكأنَّهُ

    أَثُرُ النّمال مشتْ عليه الأعْصُرُ

    Or a drawing in an abandoned tavern

    Where cups lie scattered about

  3. أو خطّ رملٍ أنشأتهُ بنانةٌ

    لسطيح من ماضي الدّهور مُسَطّرُ

    The wind blew over it, revealing faded lines

    As if they were the traces of an ant trail

  4. أو حكمةٌ مرقومةٌ في معبدٍ

    مُتهدّم شابتْ عليه الأسطرُ

    Or lines of sand made by a finger

    On an ancient slab of stone

  5. أو نقشةُ في حانةٍ مَهجورةٍ

    ألجامُ صُفّاحٌ بها مُتبعثرُ

    The tomb is weathered and eroded

    Its guest is the dust of the earth

  6. عبرتْ عليه الريحُ كاسفةَ الخُطا

    موهونةً فوق الثرى تتعثّرُ

    At night the darkness falls pondering

    Like a black man lost in the ether

  7. والليلُ أطرقَ واجماً فكأنّهُ الزّنجيُّ

    في حلكِ الأثير يُفكّرُ

    The stars flutter mercifully

    Like an eye peering from behind the veils

  8. والنجمُ يخفقُ رحمةً فتخالهُ

    عيناً من الغيب المسَتّرِ تنظرُ

    When the Nile flowed by it cried out

    Its waves swollen with affliction, almost roaring

  9. والنيل حين جرى بجانبهِ سرتْ

    في موجهِ البلوى وكادَ يزمجرُ

    Genius wailed in shock and grief

    Bereft, it wept and lamented over it

  10. والعبقريّةُ أعولتْ مشدوهةً

    ثكلى تَفجّعُ صوبَهُ وتحسّرُ

    Saying, I saw it shunned by the zealous

    Its grave a desolate, dusty pit

  11. قالتْ وقد شهدته منبوذ الحمى

    وحفيرُه في البيدِ أشأمُ أغبرُ

    The winds bound its limbs with reeds

    Plaiting them on either side

  12. والسافياتُ شددنَ من أوصاله

    قصبا تزفُّ بجانبيه فيضفرُ

    From its shrouds they made a crown

    Which the breeze tapped and plucked at

  13. ونشرن من أكفانه رغم البلى

    طاراً عليهِ يدُ النسيم تُنقّرُ

    While eternal misery leaned down

    Lording in the sanctuary of loss

  14. وهزجن والبؤس المخلّد مائلٌ

    كالأمس في حرم الردى يتبخترُ

    They held a drunken feast over its dust

    Where jinn of the wasteland danced and drank

  15. وأقمن عرسًا ماج فوق ترابهِ

    يلهو به جنُّ الفلاة ويسمرُ

    O grave, beneath these tablets lies a poet

    Whose misfortune gushed forth through history

  16. يا قبرُ لي تحت الصفائح شاعرٌ

    تاريخه من نحسهِ متفجّرُ

    He passed through life but no ear listened

    To his melody, no eye looked upon him

  17. عبر الحياة فما صغت لنشيدهِ

    أُذُنٌ ولا واستْه عينٌ تبصرُ

    His melodies were but laments

    Echoed by one perplexed in the night

  18. فكأنما ألحانهُ تأويهةٌ

    في الليل ردّدها شجٍ متحيّرُ

    Or a stifled teardrop paused

    On the brink of an eyelid, unable to fall

  19. أو دمعةٌ محنوقة وقفت على

    شط الجفون سجينةً لا تعبرُ

    Or an imprisoned prayer in a burning breast

    Whose fervor was obscured in the gloom

  20. أو دعوةٌ محبوسةٌ في مهجةٍ

    جلّى هُداها في الدُّجى مستغفرُ

    Or a whisper lost in the forest

    Snuffed out by the desolate darkness

  21. أو همسةٌ في الغاب تائهةُ الصدى

    أبلى نُفاثتها الظلامُ المصحرُ

    A world of oblivion was his cradle

    In it his forsaken grave was dug

  22. دنيا من النسيان أُلْقِيَ مهدُه

    فيها وسوّيَ لحدُهُ المتهجّرُ

    His inheritance after death is a fool

    Who rants madly from the pulpit

  23. ونصيبهُ بعدَ الفناءِ مصفّقٌ

    يهذي لراثٍ في المنابرِ يَهترُ

    And singers chant meaningless verse

    O grave, spare us such offspring of genius

  24. ومهلّلونَ لشاعرٍ مُترنّمٍ

    يلغو بأسجاع البيان ويهذِرُ

    Quiver in fright, and prostrate yourself!

    Begone, and chant toward it in exaltation

  25. يا قبرُ هدّ بِناكَ عن جنباتهِ

    مَنْ قال نسلُ العبقرية يقبرُ

    Do not despair, here lies immortality

    Its secret safe from all minds and thoughts

  26. فا هتزّ مُرتاعًا وغمغم جاثياً

    ومضى يهلّلُ نحوها ويكبّرُ

    Do not think that domes of marble

    With cypress and verdant branches

  27. لا تجزعي فهُنا الخلودُ وسرّهُ

    خافٍ على كلّ العقول مستّرُ

    Are nobler than a forgotten pit

    That hides a genius in its depths

  28. لا تحسبي قبب الرخام أظلّها

    بالسّرو ريّانُ الفروع منضّرُ

    Time passes, bones crumble to dust

    Yet glory shines from the soil

  29. نفضت بساحتها العطارُ جيوبُها

    فالمسكُ يسطع تحتها والعنبرُ

    This is your child, forgotten monument

    For whom the ages trembled in the pulse

  30. وأحالها فنُّ المصوّر آيةً

    سرتِ الحياةُ بها فكادت تطفرُ

    In the festival of the immortal

    His words are scented breaths on eternity's lip

  31. ومضت بها التيجانُ تلمع في الدّجى

    كسرى نزيلُ رحابها أو قيصرُ

    The pyramids gathered in his memory

    Had time not eroded them, all souls would gather to him

  32. أزكى ثرًى من حُفرةٍ مطموسةٍ

    دفنت بها ميْتاً لديها عبقرُ

    In every shrine and minaret they built

    His melody is chanted and repeated

  33. تذرى ويذرى العظم في هبواتها

    والخلد من ذرّ التراب منوّرُ

    A poetry that melts chains if recited

    In their shade, from its fervor they melt

  34. هذا ربيبكِ أعظمٌ منسيّةٌ

    رجفت لها في الخافقين الأدهرُ

    He shook the South with fiery revolt

    Boiling the silence of the ode, igniting it

  35. في مهرجان الخالدين حديثه

    نغمٌ على شفةِ الخلود معطّرُ

    The tyrants dreaded it, it marches on

    Like death, unhalting and undelayed

  36. حشدت له الأهرام ذكراً لو عدا

    فيها البِلى لصبا إليهِ المحشرُ

    Who dares to resent its echo in envy?

    For it drips with the blood of martyrs

  37. في كلّ محرابٍ بها وبنيّةٍ

    شادٍ يرتّل لحنه ويكرّرُ

    At Dunashwai it has an eternal echo

    That shakes time with its fervent throbbing

  38. شعرٌ إذا ما القيد صلّ حديده

    في ظلّها يُضرى لظاهُ فيصهرُ

    The gallows bowed down in dread of its scream

    The tyrant startled by its shuddering

  39. هزّ الجنوب بثورةٍ صخابةٍ

    يغلي بها صمت القصيد ويسعرُ

    If it could speak it would cry out

    "A plot against Egypt, perfidy beyond forgiveness!"

  40. تسري فيرهبها الطغاة فتبري

    كالموت لا تبطي ولا تتأخرُ

    Though their might is arrogant and haughty

    God and the dear nation are greater

  41. من راح ينكرُ حاسدًا أصداءها

    هذا دمُ الشهداء منها يقطرُ

    Awaken, Nile lover, dawn is confused

    The shores empty, the waves silent

  42. في دنشوايَ لها رنينٌ خالدٌ

    زعجَ الزمانُ دويّهُ المتسعّرُ

    Yearning, the dew unquenched in its thirst

    Longing, the waves unstirred in their depths

  43. سجدت لصرخته المشانق رهبةً

    وارتاعَ من خفقانها المتجبّرُ

    Seeking the one whose songs were its praise

    Who cried at dusk, roaring with ecstasy

  44. وأناملُ الجلاد ودّت رحمةً

    لو كلّ أنملةٍ عليها خنجرُ

    Where is the dew, the torrent of song

    Whose tune, pure of sin, brings rapture?

  45. ترتدّ في عنق الذي يهوي بها

    قدرا يذودُ عن البريءِ ويثأرُ

    Where are the birds at dawn, enchanted

    By song, given voice by spring's bloom?

  46. تخذوا الحمامَ إلى الحمامِ وسيلةً

    شنعاءَ واهتاجوا هناك وزمجروا

    From a poet who stole the dawn and broadcast it

    A melody that trills through the countryside

  47. نصبوا مشانقهم لنا فكأنّنا

    قطعانُ شاءٍ في المجازر تُنحرُ

    He plucked no strings nor played a flute

    The banks were as a flowered lute in his hands

  48. ولو انّها نطقت لصاحت في الورى

    كيدٌ لمصر وحويةٌ لا تغفرُ

    He had a passion for Egypt and a tremor in his heart

    His love carved channels through it like a torrent

  49. إن كان بطشهم تكبّر عاتياً

    فالله والوطن المفدى أكبرُ

    And an ardor that made the Orient another heart

    Beating in his breast, sensitive to wounds

  50. قمْ عاشقَ النيلِ استفقْ فصباحهُ

    حيرانُ في الشّطينِ أغينُ أصفرُ

    Ask Hoda Shaarawi how his verses shook her

    Casting off her veil in excitement

  51. صديانُ ما نقع الندى لغليلهِ

    شوقاً ولا روّاهُ موجٌ يزخرُ

    March on with torch lit, and if opposed

    Bandage the wounds of your opponent and heal

  52. لهفانُ ينتظر الذي غنى له

    ويصيح في نور الخميل ويزأرُ

    Listen to the hymn of the cedars in Lebanon

    A gentle song to enrapture and render unconscious

  53. أينَ الندى والسلسل المسكوب من

    نغمٌ صداُ بلا آثامٍ يُسكرُ

    The dancing maids with flying hair

    Swaying with the return of melody, perfumed

  54. أين البلابل في الضحى مسحورةً

    بالشدو أنطقها الربيع المزهرُ

    Shading by the island’s shadows, his tunes

    Strummed the pines and left them as rubble

  55. من شاعرٍ نهب الضحى وأذاعهُ

    لحناً يغردُ في الربى ويصَفّرُ

    His voice traveled to the new world

    Bringing rapture to the diaspora there

  56. ما شدّ أوتارًا له أو أرغناً

    بل كان شطّي في يديه المزهرُ

    And the exile among them nearly wept

    Remembering the beloved homeland

  57. ولهٌ بمصر وهزةٌ في قلبهِ

    بغرامها كاللجّ راحت تهدرُ

    Ask about him on the Day of the Imam

    Clarity streaming from its pages

  58. وهوًى أحال الشرق قلباً ثانياً

    في صدرهِ بِأسَى النوازل يشعرُ

    It raced to the holy tomb, its heart

    Gushing with grief like the rocky fountains

  59. سلْ غادة اليابان كيفَ أهاجها

    في الروع عن ضافي الثياب تُشمّرُ

    Yesterday he taught it patience in sorrow

    Now calamities pour down, how can it endure?

  60. تمضي بمشتعلِ السّنان فإن قسا

    تأسو جراحات السنان وتجبرُ

    It cried: O awakener of Islam, arise!

    Without you the East staggers crippled

  61. واسمع نشيد الأرز في لبنانِهِ

    بردى يكاد بسحرهِ يتخدّرُ

    Its minarets nearly toppled over

    Its call to prayer wailing, its pulpits crumbling

  62. والحور منتفض الغدائر راقصٌ

    نشوانُ من رجع الغِناء مُطيّرُ

    O flash of perfection that shone forth

    A stream cascading from the holy bier

  63. شادٍ بأظلالِ الجزيرةِ ساجلتْ

    ألحانَهُ تحت الصنوبر دمّرُ

    It surged in the strings of his poetry

    Humbly concealing the blaze, veiling it

  64. أسرى إلى الدنيا الجديدة صوتُهُ

    فاهتزّ من طربٍ لديها المهجرُ

    The awe of glory makes it tremble and shy

    To bare the breath of passion, smothering it

  65. واسَى النزيل بها فكاد غريبها

    يعييهِ للوطن الحبيب تذكّرُ

    The first flame in a darkened valley

    Its halo lit by his smallest glow

  66. سل عنه في يوم الإمام خريدةً

    وضحُ الهدى من صفحتيها مُسفرُ

    A heart suckled by the Nile's dew

    In the cradle, its cavern sanctified and pure

  67. فزعت إلى القبر الطهور وقلبها

    جزعاً عليه من المحاجرِ يقطرُ

    When he sings for Egypt you'd think it was the morning breeze

    Dancing over the meadows at dawn

  68. بالأمسِ علّمها التصبّرَ في الأسى

    وطحت بها البلوى فكيف تصبّرُ

    And when he rages for her you'd imagine her meadows

    Churning with tumult, the still pools stirred

  69. هتفت به يا موقظ الإسلام قُمْ

    فالشرق بعدك واهنٌ متعثّرُ

    Madly in love with homelands, beneath his tongue

    A spring gushing forth, in his soul, gardens

  70. كادت مآذنهُ تميد قبابها

    وأَذانُها يَرثي ويهوي المنبرُ

    In Egypt madness is the greatest wisdom

    Inspired by the law of loyalty, commanding it

  71. يا ومضةً من كاملٍ قد أشرقتْ

    فيضاً مِنَ النعش الطهور يُحدّرُ

    Arise, O reproacher of nations, calling out

    If their gardens have turned to stone

  72. هاجت على أوتار شاعره لظًى

    متخشّعاً يخفي اللهيب ويسترُ

    Poetry, if your people forget you in ingratitude

    The Nile on the Day of Pride will remember

  73. تذكو فيرهبها الجلال فتستحي

    فتدسّ أنفاس الضرام وتضمرُ

    You brought joy to the grieving exiles

    With your sudden music, heralding hope

  74. الشعلة الأولى بوادٍ مظلمٍ

    هالاتها من أصغريهِ تنوّرُ

    They despair, while the wounds of time lie buried

    Like secrets in a heart that won't reveal

  75. قلبٌ كأنّ النيل أرضعهُ الندى

    في المهد قدسيُّ الشغاف مطهّرُ

    You revived their pain yet I never saw you happy

    But ingratitude is expected of offspring...

  76. فإذا يجنّ لمصر تحسبه الصبا

    في فجرها فوق الخمائل تخطرُ

  77. وإذا يثور لها تخالُ مروجها

    غيلاً يهيج على ثراه القسورُ

  78. مجنون بالأوطان تحت لسانهِ

    وجنانهِ نبعٌ لها متفجّرُ

  79. إن الجنون بمصر أروعُ حكمةٍ

    يوحى بها شرع الوفاء ويأمرُ

  80. قم عاتب الأوطان حافظُ هاتفاً

    بهواه إن جنانها متحجّرُ

  81. شعرٌ إذا ينساهُ شعبُكَ جاحداً

    فالنيل في يوم الفخار سيذكرُ

  82. خبلَ الحزانى حين رنّ لبُؤسهم

    غرباءَ بالعَوْدِ المفاجيء بشّروا

  83. يأسو وأجراحُ الزمان دفينةٌ

    كسرائرٍ في قلبه لا تنشرُ

  84. أذكى أسايَ ولم أر الشادي به

    لكنّهُ نسبُ الجحود مؤصّرُ
