Joys, O cheeks of youth
And brother of study from the past
And friend of days gone by
That were more gentle with us than the breeze
In the shade of the “Law School”, and under the care of the “House of Knowledge”
I overcame you, and separation may overwhelm
Me with intimate sorrow
I deemed your poetry to be some
Of what the ancients left from (the tribe of) Tameem
God bless your poetry! It is
Indeed from the essence of Arabism
Not spun with rambling
When heard, nor with fatigue
God bless your prose, refined
And graceful! And your prose from a sage
You taught the youth good
Principles of righteous morals
And instilled in their souls
A taste for proper discernment
I swear, the love of beauty is not
Woven into a well-crafted necklace
No, nor is the glittering cup of wine in the hand of a boon companion
Dearer than the meaning of a generous man composed in eloquent words
