They fashioned poetry for you from blossoms and flowers;
I fashioned it for you from a vintner’s tavern.
What is “rum,” when I utter poetry, O Ali—and what
Are “Doots” raisins, or “Otard” cognac?
Smash your glasses, and drink, Abu Hasan,
A vintage pressed from the vineyard of my poems.
God bless you as an old man, one not escorted
By a river of wine flowing through his entrails!
His complexion ruddy, his beard white,
Yet his record black as pitch.
Old men keep vigil through the night in a sanctuary,
But Ali keeps vigil through the night in a “bar.”
Ali walks along, not knowing whether to Hell
His feet are leading him, or home.
He loses his way home while the sun is rising,
Though it lies no more than a few spans away.
Sometimes, in his stupor, he knocks upon the neighbor’s door;
Sometimes the neighbor’s wife gives him a beating.
“Yanni” reckons four glasses against him,
Or five, while he is neither conscious nor aware.
He takes a mouse, when it appears to him, for a camel;
He charges it, then runs away in terror of the mouse.
He asks for meat at a fruit seller’s shop,
And buys bananas from a butcher.
Sometimes his eyes deceive him about some man,
So he goes up and says, “A flowery good morning, Mary!”
Sometimes he meets the “metro” and kisses it
On both cheeks, greeting it with a cigar.
Sometimes the poor fellow lets off a “bomb,”
And thinks it the ringing of musical strings!
Ali, forgive me if I have gone too far in my nonsense;
For you hold rank and worth in my regard.
In you, my friend, I salute nobility entire;
In you I salute a tongue that never stumbles.
In you I salute conversation light upon the ear—
How much talk resembles a pelting of stones!
A light spirit, and fragrant manners
Which, if arranged, would become bouquets of flowers.
Your two sons suffice you; through them the homeland grows stronger;
Both shine like a star traveling by night.
At Sheikh Saad’s gathering, you are its delight—
God bless you, a full moon among moons!
You have no flaw except a glass you take to bed,
Which, in sleep, spares you a wife and in-laws,
And all the women Egypt has brought forth, and all
The mature beauties and virgins Paris has borne.
Time has spoiled a certain thing—you know it well;
No apothecary’s remedy can mend it now.
By right of seniority, live secluded in the house,
And hide yourself there behind curtains.
Do not grow angry over beans or lentils,
Even if they bring you deadly, seething poison.
Live long, Ali, and spend your lifetime among
Cups and bowls, amusement and evening tales.
Let whoever wishes bewail his luck, sobbing,
And squander his life in worries and brooding.
Fill your glasses and drink however you please, and say:
“O soul, do not despair of the Lord’s mercy.”
Disgrace lies only in the harm you inflict upon people;
There is no disgrace in the wine or in the glass.
God, in His generosity, may forgive the drunkard,
And leave the clever monk forever in the Fire.
Ali, this is the verse you asked of me;
Value every line of it at a thousand dinars.
Poetry is precious, yet I bestow it freely
Upon you—for, like me, you are hungry and bare.
