1. للخلد صِنوٌ: وصنو الخلد لُبنَانُ

    قم سائل القوم: مَنْ في القوم رِضوانُ؟

  2. الله صوَّرَ لبنانًا فأبدعه

    كما تأنَّقَ في التمثال فنَّان

    God sculpted Lebanon, so He made it perfect

    As an artist embellished a statue

  3. يا جيرةَ الأرز، إنَّ الأرز يَبلغُ ما

    لا يبلغُ الطلحُ من نفسي، ولا البان

    Oh neighbor of the cedars, the cedars reach what

    My soul and mind cannot reach, nor the palm tree and milk

  4. هي العروبةُ أنتم في ذُؤابتها

    مُذْ قام حول تُخوم الروم غسَّان

    You are Arabism, you in its cloak

    Since Ghassan surrounded the borders of Rome

  5. مُلْكٌ بناه أواليكم، ودعَّمَهُ

    بالوحي أبناءُ مَرْوانٍ، ومرْوان

    A kingdom your ancestors built, and reinforced

    With revelation, the sons of Marwan, and Marwan

  6. يا جيرةَ الأرز، ما أنتم لعمريَ في

    مصرٍ، ولا نحنُ في لُبنانَ ضيفان

    Oh neighbor of the cedars, for my life you are not in

    Egypt, nor are we guests in Lebanon

  7. في شاطئ النيل: أهلوكم، وموطِنُكم

    وفي الشآم لنا، أهلٌ، وأوطان

    On the banks of the Nile: they hosted you, and your homeland

    And in the Levant, we have family and homelands

  8. مَحَت تخومُ بنيها الضادُ فاتَّحَدَتْ

    أقطارُهم؛ فهمو في الضاد إخوان

    The homes of its children were erased by the letter ‘D’, so their

    Regions were united; so they are brothers in the ‘D’

  9. إنْ تسألِ العربيَّ الحرَّ عن وطنٍ

    أو ملَّةٍ قال: إنَّ الجَدَّ عدنان

    If you ask the free Arab about a homeland

    Or creed, he will say: the grandfather is Adnan

  10. يا جيرةَ الأرز، لن ننسى أيادَيكم

    وليس للفضل عند الحر نسيان

    Oh neighbor of the cedars, we will never forget your

    Favors, and favors are never forgotten by the noble

  11. إن الصحافَةَ أنتم أسُّ نَهضتها

    لولاكمو، لم تقم للصُّحْف عمدان

    You were the pioneers of journalism

    Without you, the columns would not have stood

  12. لكم على النيل أَهرامٌ دِعامتُها

    سحرُ البلاغة، لا صخرٌ وصَوَّان

    You have pyramids on the Nile, their

    Pillars are the magic of eloquence, not rock and sculpture

  13. إن كان للضاد آدابٌ تتيه بها

    فإِن فارسَها السبَّاقَ زِيدان

    If the letter ‘D’ has manners in which it gets lost

    Then its lead stallion is Zaydan

  14. للضاد شاد اليسوعيُّون مكتبةً

    لم تحوها زمن المأمون بغْدان؟

    The Jesuits built a library for the letter ‘D’

    Was the library of al-Ma’mūn in Baghdad not enough?

  15. هذي معاجمُهم. هل في معاجمهم

    إلا عقيقٌ من الفصحى ومرَجانُ؟

    Anything but gems of classical Arabic and coral?

    The refreshing ones cultivated the terrain of poetry

  16. اليازجيُّون راض الشعرَ رائضهُم

    من بعد ما جمحَتْ للشعر أوزان

    After metrics had become muddled for poetry

    Thanks to them, Ahmad returned to the hoary one

  17. بفضلهم عاد للشَّهباء أحمدُها

    بل أحمداها، وزارَ الشام حَسانُ

  18. لولا غطارفُ في الدنيا الجديدة، ما

    أصْغت إلى لغة الأعراب آذان

    Ears would not have listened to the language of nomads

  19. هم فاتحون وإن لم يشهَرُوا قُضُبًا

    أو تحترق بلهيب النار أبدان

    Swords, or their bodies were not burned by fire

    When the enlightened era dawned, you were

  20. لما تبَّلجَ عصرُ النور، كان لكم

    سبقٌ إلى خدمة الفصحى وإمعان

    First to serve classical Arabic thoroughly

    You strove, and Egypt strove, as if you two

  21. جريتمو، وجَرَتْ مصرٌ، كأنكما

    طِرفان ضمَّهُما للسبق ميدان

    Were two steeds joined in the race track

    And it is enough for Egypt when its glories are counted:

  22. وحسبُ مصرَ إذا عُدَّتْ مفاخرُها:

    روضٌ من العلم والآداب فَيْنان

    A meadow of knowledge and literature extremely delightful

    The House of Sciences, and what is the House of Sciences but

  23. دارُ العلوم، وما دارُ العلوم سوى

    عقدٍ تتيهُ به الفصحى وتزدان

    A necklace in which classical Arabic roams and adorns itself?

    For the letter ‘D’, rather in the East altogether

  24. للضاد في مصرَ بل في الشرق أجمعِهِ

    حصْنٌ بَنُوها له: أسٌّ، وأركان

    It has a fortress they built for it: a foundation and pillars

    If Wael was followed by clouds, it had amongst them

  25. إن أعقَبتْ وائلٌ سحبانَ، كان لَها

    من بينهم ألفُ سحبانٍ وسحبانُ

    A thousand clouds and a cloud

    They penetrated the lands of the East, and spread

  26. تغلغلوا في ربوع الشرق، وانتشروا

    كأنهم صَيِّبٌ في الشرق هتَّان

    As if they were a downpour in the East, gushing

    As if the letter ‘D’ were a religion they promote

  27. كأنما الضادُ دينٌ ينشرون له

    دَعْوَى. وبعضُ اللُّغَى للناس أديان

    For people. And some ignorance is religions for people

    Envoys of culture, pure springs. We are in a time

  28. رُسْلَ الثقافة، مرحَى. نحن في زمنٍ

    أمضى سلاحٍ به: علمٌ، وعرفان

    Whose most effective weapon is: science and cognition

    If their culture united peoples

  29. إن وحَّدتْ بين أقوام ثقافتهُم

    فلن نُفرِّقَ ذاتَ البَيْن بُلدان

    We will not divide an entity into countries

    Haughtiness is not in shoulders but

  30. ليس التكانُفُ بالأكتاف مظهرُهُ

    لكنما هو إحساسٌ ووِجدان

    Rather, it is a feeling and essence

    I feel, and my feeling does not lie to me,

  31. إني أحُسُّ وحسِّي ليس يكذِبُني

    مستقبلاً ملؤُهُ عزٌّ وسلطان

    Of a future filled with glory and authority

    The past of Arabism marches towards its present

  32. ماضي العروبة يخطو نحوَ حاضرها

    لي بالعروبةِ والرحمنِ إيمان

    I have faith in Arabism and the Merciful

    If the sons of Ya’rub ruled people,

  33. أبناءُ يعرُبَ إن سادوا الأنام، فقد

    عاد الأنامُ رعاياهم كما كانوا

    People returned to being their subjects as they were

    A star I was anticipating rose on the horizon

  34. أطلَّ في الأفْقِ نجمٌ كُنتُ أرقُبهُ

    كرَّتْ عليه الليالي وهُوَ وَسْنَان

    The nights passed over it, and it is strong

    As if they were covering the earth in strides

  35. هذي خيولُ الصلاحيين قد زَحفَتُ

    كأنها وهْيَ تطوي الأرض عِقْبان

    Wait, Palestine, you called for help

    His reply: Heights and rough terrain

  36. مهلاً فِلسطينُ، قد ناديتِ معتِصمًا

    جوابُهُ: مَشْرفيَّاتٌ وخُرصَان

    God knows our goal is peace

    And we of Doha are: shade and branches

  37. الله يعم أنَّ السِّلمَ غايُتنا

    ونحن من دَوْحه: ظلٌ، وأَغْصان

    How far is hostility from us! We are people

    Yearning for the most high, not thirsty for spilt blood

  38. ما أبعدَ البغيَ عنا! إننا نفرٌ

    إلى العلا لا الدمِ الموَّارِ ظمآن

    But truth, for which proofs arise

    Thus the sword alone proves it

  39. لكنه الحقُّ لهم تنَهضْ به حُجَجٌ

    فما له غيرَ حدِّ السيف برهان

    Truth is a pearl that sank in a sea of blood

    It has two fishers: a fleet and horsemen

  40. الحق لؤلؤةٌ غاصت ببحر دمٍ

    لها شِراكان: أسطولٌ وفُرسان

    No worries, if the guardians of security rejected

    Egypt, even if power supported it they would submit

  41. لا هُمَّ، إن حماةَ الأمنِ قد جَحَدوا

    مصرًا، ولو أيَّدتْها قوةٌ دانوا

    The Nile sighed when a voice from Bardawil

    Cried, supporting it while the free man helps

  42. ترنَّحَ النيلُ لما صاح من بَردَى

    صوتٌ يعاونُه والحرُّ مِعوان

    A voice from eternity, sublime echo, chirping

    Sweetly, like the dawn’s call to prayer, ringing

  43. صوتٌ من الخلد عُلويُّ الصَّدَى، غرِدٌ

    مستعذَبٌ، كأذان الفجر رنَّان

    An article that Egypt heard reverently

    As if it were a Bible or Qur’an

  44. مقالة سمعتها مصرُ خاشعةً

    كأنما هي إنجيلٌ وقرآن

    A “knight” guided me with it to a candid meeting

    So the edifice of colonialism shook

  45. أَدْلَني بها «فارسٌ» بلقاءَ سافرةً

    فاهتزَّ من حصْن الاستعمار بنيان

    Those closest have preached peace, shrouds have been

    Woven by their hands for peace

  46. إن الأُلَى بشَّروا بالسلم قد نُسجَتْ

    من صُنع أيديهمو للسِّلم أكفان

    The covenant of the ocean collapsed after the wars to

    The bottom of the ocean, and waves are rampant

  47. عهدُ المحيط هَوَى بعد الحروب إلى

    قاعِ المحيط، وللأمواج طُغيان

    People are not, as they said, all equal

    Rather, people are two sorts: flocks and wolves

  48. ليس الأنامُ كما قالوا سواسيَةً

    بل في الأنام سَراحينٌ: وقُطْعَان

    Peace is not a fluttering flag with a banner

    As long as there is dissension and hyenas between people!

  49. ليس السلامُ بخفَّاقٍ له عَلَمٌ

    مادام بين الورى شَاءٌ وذُؤْبَان!
