1. قالوا: المعلمُ. قلت: لَستُ أُغالي

    إن قُلتُ: هذا صانِعُ الأَجيالِ

    They said: The teacher. I said: I do not exaggerate

    If I say: He is the maker of generations

  2. إن قلتُ: صوَّرها، وأَبَدَعَ خَلْقَهَا

    لم يُغضِب الرَّحمنَ صِدقُ مقالِي

    If I say: He depicted them, and created their nature

    The truth of my words does not anger the Most Merciful

  3. نُورُ المعلّمِ نفحةٌ قدسِيَّةٌ

    من نُورِ وَجْه الخَالِق المُتعالي

    The light of the teacher is a sacred breath

    From the light of the face of the Exalted Creator

  4. وصَداهُ من صَوْت الإله، كأنَّهُ

    إن رَاحَ يُطلِقُه أَذانُ بِلالِ

    And its echo from the voice of God, as if

    When Bilal called for prayer, he let it out

  5. صَنَع الصواريخَ المُبِيدةَ غيرُهُ

    وعلى يَدَيْه يتم صُنعُ رِجالِ

    Others made the deadly rockets

    While through his hands the making of men is done

  6. أبدًا يُبشِّر بالسَّلام، وليس مَنْ

    بَيْنِي السَّلام كقَاطِع الآجالِ

    He always brings good tidings of peace, and is not one

    Who hastens the appointed time of death

  7. جُنْدِيُّكِ المَجهولُ يا مِصْرُ الذي

    لا فِي البُكورِ يَنِي، ولا الآصَال

    Your unknown soldier, O Egypt, who

    Neither in the early dawn complains, nor in the late evenings

  8. في ساعة الجُلَّي يَجِئُ مَشَمِّرًا

    وَيَغِيبُ ساعَ قِسْمةِ الأَنْفالِ

    In the hour of agony he comes determined

    And disappears at the time of dividing the spoils

  9. كم أَغَفلُوه، فما تَراءَى شاكِيًا

    أو باكِيًا من عِلّة الإغفالِ

    How often they neglected him, yet he did not appear complaining

    Or crying from the ailment of neglect

  10. حَسْبُ المعلِّم: راحةٌ نَفْسِيَّةٌ

    تغنيه إذْ يَشْكُو من الإِقلالِ

    It is enough for the teacher - a psychological comfort

    That satisfies him when he complains of scarcity

  11. ما بَعْدَ تَقويمِ النُفوسِ سَعادةٌ

    أو بعد مَحْوِ جَهالةِ الجُهَّالِ

    There is no happiness after correcting souls

    Or after erasing the ignorance of the ignorant

  12. ما ضَرَّه عِرْضٌ سلِيمٌ فوقَه

    ثَوبٌ رخِيصٌ، أو قَمِيصٌ بَالِي

    What harm has a sound livelihood done to him atop which

    Is a cheap garment, or a worn-out shirt

  13. كَمْ مكثِرٍ ما نَالَ من إكثارِهِ

    إِلا ازْديَادَ الهَمِّ والبَلْبالِ

    How much did the hoarder gain from his hoarding

    Except increasing worries and confusion

  14. فِيمَ الشّراءُ الجَمُّ؟ ليس لمَيِّتٍ

    كفنٌ به جَيْبٌ لحِفْظِ المَالِ!

    What is the point of excessive buying? There is no shroud

    With a pocket to keep money!

  15. ولقد قَضيتُ العُمرَ أطْبَع فِتْيَتِي

    طَبْعًا على كَرَمٍ، وحُسْنِ خِلالِ

    I have spent my life imprinting chivalry on my students

    Imprinting generosity and good manners

  16. كم كُنتُ أحبُوهم بَعْطِفي دائِمًا

    لا فرقَ بَيْنَهُمُو وبَيْن عِيالِي

    How much I loved them with my constant kindness

    No difference between them and my own children

  17. حَسْبِي فَخارًا: أن أقدِّم للحِمَى

    من فِتْيَتِي بَطَلاً من الأبطالِ

    It is enough pride for me: to present to the nation

    From my students a hero of heroes

  18. يا رُبَّ أروعَ ماجدٍ صادَفْتُه

    فسألتُ عنه، فَكانَ من أنجالِي

    O Lord of the most wondrous glory I have encountered

    When I asked about him, he turned out to be one of my sons

  19. أمْسَى يُبادِلُني الوفاءَ بِمِثْلِهِ

    إن الجَمِيلَ يُكالُ بالمِكْيالِ

    He reciprocates my loyalty in kind

    Good is repaid with its like

  20. كانوا تَلامِذَتِي، فَصَارُوا إخْوَتي

    وأعزَّ أصحابِي، وأَكرمَ آلِي

    They were my students, and became my brothers

    And my dearest friends, and my most honored family

  21. أنَّى اتجهتُ، وجدتُهم بِيَ أحْدَقُوا

    «مِنْ عَنْ يَمِينِي تارةً وشِمالِي»

    Wherever I turned, I found them staring at me

    "From my right side and from my left"

  22. يا مُنْصِفي العُمَّال، هلاَّ زِنْتُمُو

    باسْمِ المُعَلّم صَفحة العُمَّالِ؟

    O you who are fair to workers, why don't you

    Place on the workers’ page the name of the teacher?

  23. هو عاملٌ، بل راهِبٌ مُتَبَتُلٌ

    صُوَرُ العِبادة جَمَّةُ الأَشكالِ

    He is a worker, rather a devoted worshipper

    The images of worship are manifold

  24. يا رُبَّ دَرْسٍ واحدٍ أربَى عَلَي

    تَسْبِيح أَيَّامٍ، وذِكْر لَيالِي

    O Lord of one lesson that cultivated in me

    Glorifications of days, and mentions of nights

  25. وَلَرُبَّمَا نَسِيَ المُعَلِّم نَفْسَهُ

    وَجَنَي عليه جهِادُه المُتَوالِي

    Sometimes the teacher forgets himself

    And his continual struggle does him injustice

  26. ولقد يَنامُ وكُتْبُه من حَوْلِهِ

    فكأَنه مِنْهُنَّ بين تِلالِ

    He sleeps while books are around him

    As if he is among hills

  27. وَبَبِيتُ يَهْدِي بالدَرُوسِ، كأَنَّه

    في الفَصْل بين إجابةٍ وسُؤال

    And I spend the night guiding with lessons, as if

    He is in class between a question and an answer

  28. أو نازِلٌ بجَزِيرةٍ، أو سابحٌ

    في البحر بين الرَّأسِ والشَّلاَل

    Or residing on an island, or swimming

    In the sea between the headland and the waterfall

  29. أو غارِقٌ مع خالدٍ أو طارقٍ

    في الحَرْب بين صَوارمٍ وعوالي

    Or sinking with Khaled or Tariq

    In battle among swords and lofty peaks

  30. أو منْشِدٌ للنَّشْءِ شِعْرَ حماسةٍ

    أَو نادِبٌ طَلَلاً من الأَطْلالِ

    Or singing to the youth poetry of fervor

    Or lamenting ruins from the ruins

  31. أو بَيْن أهرامٍ، وبَيْن دَوائرٍ

    مَجْهُولةِ الأحْجامِ والأطْوالِ

    Or between pyramids, and between circles

    Of unknown dimensions and lengths

  32. أو بين أفعالٍ صَحاحٍ ما شَكَت

    عِللاً، ومُعْتلٍّ من الأَفْعالِ

    Or between valid pure verbs that have not

    Complained of defects, and defective verbs

  33. ناد المعُلّم قبل آسادِ الشَّرَى

    يا ابنَ العرين، ويا أبَا الأشْبال

    The teacher called before the lions of evil

    O son of the lair, o father of cubs

  34. رَسَنُ الشَّبيبَة في يَدَيْك، وإنَّها

    حَبلُ الرَّجَاءِ، ومَعْقِدُ الآمالِ

    The foundations of youth are in your hands, and it

    Is the rope of hope, and the knot of aspirations

  35. قَدِّرْ خُطاَكَ؛ فأنتَ وحدَك قُدْوةً

    للنَّشْءِ في الأقوالِ والأعمالِ

    Be careful in your steps; for you alone are

    An example for the youth in words and deeds

  36. لَيْسَ المدرِّسُ ناجحًا في دَرْسِه

    ما لم يكُن للنَّشْءِ خَيرَ مِثالِ

    The teacher does not succeed in his lesson

    Unless he is the best example for the youth

  37. لو قدَّر اللهُ الكمالَ لغَيْرِه

    قُلْنَا له: استَمْسِك بكُل كَمالِ

    If God had granted perfection to others

    We would say to him: Hold on to all perfection

  38. ما حلَّ من عبَثٍ لَغْيرِك، فَهْو في

    شَرْع الوَرَىْ لك أنتَ غَيْرُ حَلالِ

    What others do wrongfully is in no way

    Lawful for you to do

  39. النَّاسُ تَصفَح عن سِواكَ؛ وإنَّما

    يَزِنُون ذَنْبَك أنتَ بالمِثْقالِ

    People overlook your own faults; rather

    They weigh your own sins precisely

  40. أقسمتُ، ما جَارُوا عَلَيْك؛ وإنَّما

    وضَعُوك منهم مَوْضِعَ الإِجْلالِ

    I swear they have not wronged you; rather

    They have placed you in a position of utmost honor

  41. لا تَشْكُ من عَنَتِ الحَياةِ، فإِنَّما

    شَكْوَى العَزِيز بِدَايَةُ الإذْلاَلِ

    Do not complain of the hardships of life, for

    The complaint of the honorable is the beginning of disgrace

  42. أوَ مَا نَظَرتُ إلى المهندسِ كادِحًا

    في القَيْظِ بين جَنادِلٍ ورِمالِ؟!

    The free man is he who carries life on his shoulder

    Like a mountain, not complaining of burdens

  43. وإلى الطَّبِيبِ يَعِيش طِيلَةَ عُمْرِه

    ما بين حَشْرَجَةٍ؛ وبَيْن سُعالِ؟!

    O finest soldiers, how they adorned

    The chest of struggle with a crescent and star

  44. ولرُبّ قاض تَنْقَضِي أيامُه

    في صُحْبَة السَّفَّاكِ والنَّشَّالِ!

    Why don’t you accept the advice of an experienced comrade

    Who did not neglect his duty, and is not idle?

  45. وتعيشُ أنتَ مع المَلائِك ناعمًا

    في الخُلْد بَيْن أَرائكٍ وظِلالِ

    If the struggle made him tired, his spirit

    And feeling are with you in every arena

  46. خدَعَتْك نفسُك إن ظَنَنْتَ سِوَاكَ مِنْ

    شَتَّى الطَّوائِفِ مُستَريحَ البَالِ

    Raise the youth on virtue; it is

    The adornment of one adorned, the state of a state

  47. الكُلُّ شَاكٍ حَظَّه، مُتَبَرِّمٌ

    هَيْهَاتَ أن يَرضَى الأنامُ بحالِ!

    Religion is no adversary of civilization; rather they

    Are two close companions, nay two bodies in one garb

  48. والحُرُّ مَنْ حَمَل الحَياةَ بمَنْكِبٍ

    كالطّوْدِ لا يَشْكُو من الأثْقالِ

    Tell them: Prayer is exercise

    And protection from tribulation and misguidance

  49. يأيُها الجُنْدُ الأُلَى ما زَيَّنُوا

    صَدْرَ الجِهاد بأنْجُمِ وهِلالِ

    Tell them: The Hanafi school alone

    Was the treasure of early conquerors

  50. هلاّ قَبِلْتُم نُصحَ خِدْنٍ سابقٍ

    لم يَسلُ شِكَّتَه، ولَيْسَ بِسالِ؟

    “God is the Greatest” is an atomic explosion

    By which shepherds conquered the existence

  51. إن كان أعياهُ النِّضالُ، فرُوحُه

    وشُعورُه مَعَكم بكُلّ مجال

    No nation accomplished its goals unless

    Its doctrine was firmly rooted like mountains

  52. رَبُّوا الشَّبابَ على الفَضيلة؛ إنَّها

    هي زَينُ مُزْدَانٍ، وحِلْيَةُ حَالِ

    And if the people are corrupted in their faith

    Mourn them in wailing and crying

  53. ما الدِّينُ خَصْمٌ للحَضَارة؛ بل هُمَا

    صِنْوانٍ، بل جَسَدَان في سِرْبالِ

    And if the ties of its morals dissolved

    You will find in it no way to scheme

  54. قُولُوا لهم: إن الصَّلاةَ رياضَةٌ

    ووقايةٌ من فِتنَةٍ وضَلالِ

    The star of a nation has never been circled by decadence

    Except that it signaled its demise

  55. قُولُوا لَهُم: إنَّ الحَنِيفَةَ وَحْدَهَا

    كَانت ذَخيرةَ فَاتِحيِن أوَالِي

    Solve for us all the problems of youth

    For they have long defied the capable

  56. «اللهُ أكبرُ» طَلْقةٌ ذَرِّيَّةٌ

    مَلَكَ الوُجُودَ بها رُعاة جمال

    Dive into the depths of youth, and penetrate

    From every tightly locked door

  57. ما حَقَّق الأهدافَ إلاّ أُمَّةٌ

    رَسَخَتْ عَقِدَتُها رُسُوخَ جِبالِ

    And when you know where its sickness lies

    Eradicate it, no matter the eradication

  58. وإذا أُصِيْبَ الشَّعْبُ في إيمانِه

    فانْدُبْه في نَوْحٍ، وفي إعوالِ

    You, when the doctors have been puzzled by its chronic illnesses

    From every stubborn disease of the souls

  59. وإذا هو انحَلَّت عُرى أَخْلاقِه

    لم تُجْدِ فيه حِيلةُ المُحْتالِ

    Do not despair of curing the diseased, even if

    The treatment has been long for him, no matter how long

  60. ما طاف طائِفُ الانْحِلالِ بأُمَّةٍ

    إلا وآذَنَ نَجْمُها بِزَوالِ

    Reaching the sky was once the greatest myth

    Yet today it is not impossible

  61. حُلُّوا لنا عُقَدَ الشَّبابِ جمِيعَها

    فَلَطَالَمَا استعْصَت على الحلاَّلِ

    And make the children feel intimate in your circles

    With innocence like the innocence of children

  62. غُوصُوا بأغْوار الشبِيِبَة، وانْفُذُوا

    من كُلّ بَابٍ مُحْكَم الأقْفالِ

    With the tenderness of a mother, and the gentleness of a father

    And the love of uncles and aunts

  63. فإذا عرفْتُمْ أين يَكمُن دَاؤها

    فاستأصِلُوه أيَّما استِئْصالِ

    And the most deserving of guiding the little ones is the adept

    Whose skills were honed by lessons, no matter the honing

  64. أنتُم إذا عَجَزَ الطَّبِيبُ أُساتُها

    من كلّ داءٍ في النُّفوس عُضالِ

    O you who stand for peacemaking, lead the ranks

    With Hannibal’s determination

  65. لا تَيْئَسُوا من بُرْءِ ذي سَقَمٍ، وإن

    طالَ العِلاجُ عليه أيَّ مَطالِ

    The nest is infested; so sheathe your pens

    And gird yourselves with swords and blades

  66. كان الصُّعودُ إلى السَّماء خُرافةً

    كُبْرَى، فَصارَ اليوم غَيرَ مُحالِ

    The problem is: the atmosphere of peace does not

    Clear except through battles and fighting

  67. واستَأنِسوا الأطفال في حَلقَاتِكُم

    بِبَراءةٍ كبَراءةِ الأطْفالِ

    Knowledge is the banner of peace, but they

    Corrupted it through its misuse

  68. بِحَنانِ وَالدِةٍ، ورِقَةِ وَالدٍ

    ومَحَبَّةِ الأعْمام والأخْوالِ

    You, by my life, ignite revolutions in the heart of the nation

    And build independence

  69. وأحقُّ مَنْ ساسَ الصِّغارَ مُحَنكٌ

    صَقَلَتَهُ دُورُ العِلْم أيَّ صِقالِ

    And the dearest of what the nation possessed of revolutions

    And the fighters against anarchy and exploitation

  70. يا وَاقِفين على السَّلام جُهُودَهُم

    قُودُوا الصُّفوفَ بِعَزْم هانيِبَال

    And the breakers of shackles from the nation’s feet

    After they had swollen from shackles

  71. دِيسَ العَرينُ؛ فأغمدُوا أقلامكم

    وتَقَلَّدُوا بأسِنَّة ونِصالِ

    And the unifiers of Arab unity, which from

    Prolonged disunity has torn limbs

  72. ومنَ البليَّةَ: أنّ جَوَّ السّلْم لا

    يَصْفُو بِغَيْر مَعارِكٍ وقِتالِ

    And the descending into the fields of turmoil

    Like lions when Egypt says, “Fight!”

  73. العِلم عُنوانُ السَّلامِ، وإنَّما

    هُمْ أفسَدُوه بسُوءِ الاسْتِعْمالِ

    And those who cheapen their souls in its love

    And for Egypt everything precious is cheap

  74. أنتُم لعَمْرِي مُشْعِلُو الثَّوراتِ في

    قَلْبِ الحِمَى، وبُناةُ الاسْتِقْلاَلِ

    And those who write for it the pages of its glory

    On the day of the epic with pouring blood

  75. وأعزُّ ما مَلَكَ الحِمَى من ثَوْرَةٍ

    ومُحَارِبُو الفَوْضَى والاسْتِغَلالِ

    And by your hands Egypt will be victorious

    And its vanished glories will return

  76. ومُحَطِّمُو الأغلالِ عن سَاقِ الحِمَى

    من بعد ما وَرِمَتَ من الأَغْلالِ

    And it will taste what the vicious Tatars tasted

    They in viciousness are the epitome

  77. ومُوَحِّدو شَمْلِ العُرُوبة، وَهْوَ مِنْ

    طُولِ الشِّقاق مُمزَّقُ الأوْصالِ

    And God will fulfill hope; so we will not see

    In Jerusalem for Zion a specter

  78. والنازِلُونَ إلى مَيادين الوَغَى

    كالأُسْدِ حين تَقُولُ مِصْرُ: «نَزالِ»

    And God does not forget those who are humble before Him! And how

    Much God delays but does not neglect!

  79. والمُرخِصًون نفُوسَهم في حُبِّها

    ولِمْصرَ يَرخُص كُلُّ شَيْءٍ غالِ

    Anwar carried the trust, and Anwar has

    Two shoulders bearing the burdens

  80. والكاتِبُون لها صَحَائِفَ مَجْدِها

    يَوْمَ الكَرِيهَة بالدَّمِ السَّيَّال

    Egypt, nay all of Arabdom, knew him

    As one who plunges into terrors, and a fighter

  81. وعلى يَدَيْكم سوفَ يَنْتَصِر الحِمَى

    وتَعُودُ أمجادٌ لمِصْرَ خَوالِي

    Good fortune and success are with his allies

    The alliance of good fortune and success still stands!

  82. وتَذُوقَ ما ذَاقَ التَّتَارُ عِصَابَةٌ

    هي في الشَّراسَةِ مَضْربُ الأمثالِ

    If one beauty departs from Egypt

    In Egypt at times of calamity are a thousand beauties

  83. ويُحَقِّقُ اللهُ الرجاءَ؛ فلا نَرَى

    في القُدْس للصِّهْيَوْنِ طَيْفَ خَيالِ

  84. واللهُ لا يَنْسَى كِنَانَتَهُ! وكَمْ

    للهِ إمْهالٌ بِلاَ أهمالِ!

  85. حَمَل الأمانَة أنورٌ، ولأنْوَر

    كَتِفَان تَضْطَلِعَان بالأحْمالِ

  86. عرفَتْهُ مِصْرُ بَل العُروبَةُ كُلُّها

    خَوَّاضَ أهوالٍ، وحِلْسَ نِضالِ

  87. اليُمْنُ والإقبالُ من حُلَفَائِه

    لا زَالَ حِلْفَ اليُمْنِ والإقبالِ!

  88. إن غاب عن مِصْرٍ جَمالٌ واحدٌ

    فبِمِصْرَ يَوْمَ الرَّوْع ألفُ جَمالِ
