1. تجلَّى على الأرضِ عدلُ السَّماء

    يرفُّ بأجنحةِ من ضياء

    The justice of heaven is manifest on earth

    An angel flutters with wings of light

  2. ملاكٌ يمسُّ بكف الحنانِ

    جبينَ الشقيّ؛ فيمحو الشقاء

    A cherub touches with the palm of tenderness

    The brow of the wretched; and so erases misfortune

  3. ويخفضُ للضعفاء الجناحَ

    ويعصفُ كالريح بالأقوياء

    And lowers a wing for the weak

    And whirls like the wind against the powerful

  4. ألا إنما الناسُ من آدمٍ

    وآدمُ كلُّ بنيه سواء

    Behold, people are from Adam

    And Adam is equal to all his children

  5. أصيغ امرؤٌ من نُضارٍ وطيبٍ

    وصيغ امرؤ من تراب وماء؟

    Is one human molded from choicest elements and goodness

    And another human molded from dust and water?

  6. تباركتَ ربي! أأنت قسمت

    عبادك بين ذئابٍ وشاء؟

    Blessed are You my Lord! Did you apportion

    Your servants between wolves and sheep?

  7. أمِن بعض خلقك أنت صنعتَ

    عبيدًا، ومن بعضهم أمراء؟

    Or did you create some of your creation

    As slaves, and others as rulers?

  8. ودينُك دينُ المساواة وهْوَ

    من الطبقات لعمري براء

    Yet your religion is one of equality and it

    Is by my life free of classes

  9. سننت الشرائعَ من أجلها

    وأرسلت من أجلها الأنبياء

    You instituted laws for its sake

    And sent prophets for its sake

  10. أيبشَمُ بالزاد جوفٌ، وجوفٌ

    يعُزُّ عليه فتاتُ الغذاء؟

    Does one belly brim with provision, while another

    Is pained by a morsel of food?

  11. ويكرُع قوم عتيق المُدامِ

    وقومُ إلى كأس ماءٍ ظِماء؟

    And do some quaff aged wine

    While others thirst for a cup of water?

  12. ويفترشُ الخَزَّ جنبٌ، وجنبٌ

    إذا نام لم يلق إلا العراء؟

    And does one side recline on brocade

    While the other, when asleep, finds only bare ground?

  13. إذا الفقرُ كان جزاءَ الفقير

    فما بال أطفاله الأبرياء؟

    If poverty is the lot of the poor

    Then what of their innocent children?

  14. وما ذنبُ طفلٍ تَخُطُّ الحياةُ

    له صفحةَ البؤس قبل اللقاء؟

    And what is the sin of a babe whose path in life

    Is drawn by the pen of misery before meeting him?

  15. وما فضل طفلٍ إذا ما استهلّ

    تلقتهُ في المهد أيدي الإماء؟

    And what is the merit of a babe who, upon emerging

    From the womb, falls into the hands of maidservants?

  16. وما شاد هذا صروح السلامِ

    ولا اعتاد ذلك سفكَ الدماء

    And what has this one built of peace’s castles

    And has that one grown accustomed to shedding blood?

  17. ولو ساد في الأرض عدلُ السماءِ

    لعاش الأنام بها سعداء

    And if the justice of heaven prevailed on earth

    People would live happily upon it

  18. لقد جلب الفقر حبُّ الغنى

    وعجَّل بالموتِ حبُّ البقاء

    Verily, poverty has brought love of wealth

    And hastened death with love of survival

  19. وما ضنَّ بالدَّر ضرعُ السحاب

    ولا شحَّ بطنُ الثرى بالنَّماء

    Neither has the udder of clouds begrudged the rain

    Nor the belly of the earth begrudged growth

  20. ولا شكَت الأرض من حملها

    ولا ضاق بالناس رحبُ الفضاء

    Neither has the earth complained of its burden

    Nor has the expanse of space felt cramped by people

  21. ولكن تفشّى السُّعارُ، فكان

    ضحيَّةَ هذا السُّعار الرخاء

    But greed has spread, and so it was

    That luxury fell prey to this greed

  22. تباركتَ يا بارئ الكائناتِ!

    لكَ الأرضُ تورثُها من تشاء

    Blessed are You, Maker of creation!

    To You the earth entrusts her inheritance to whomever You wish

  23. تحكَّم في أرضك المالكون

    وشنُّوا الحروب على الأُجراء

    The tyrants have taken control of Your earth

    And waged wars against the weak

  24. فلما قضيتَ بردِّ الحقوق

    إلى أهلها، أجهَشُوا بالبُكاء

    So when You decreed the restoration of rights

    To their people, they wept loudly

  25. لحُكمك هم أعلَنوا كارهين

    ولو قدرُوا ناصَبُوك العداء

    Though unhappy with Your judgement

    They declared it publicly, and if able would show enmity to You

  26. ألا أيُّها المالكون، كأنِّي

    بكم تتحدَّون حُكم القضاء

    Lo, o tyrants, it seems to me

    You challenge the decree of destiny

  27. وللهِ في العدل سرٌّ خفيٌّ

    دعوني أُزلْ عنه بعضَ الخفاء

    And God has in justice a hidden secret

    Let me unveil some of that secrecy

  28. رضاءُ المكافح عنكم ثراءٌ

    إذا فاتكم فأنتٌ من ثراء

    The contentment of those who struggle is wealth to you

    When absent from you, while you remain in wealth

  29. ولن تأمنُوا شرَّهَ الجائعينَ

    إذا السُّخطُ حلَّ محلَّ الرضاء

    And you will not be safe from their hungry evil

    If discontent takes the place of contentment

  30. وكم أهلك المالُ من حَازهُ

    إذا المالُ لم يقترن بالسخاء

    And how much wealth has destroyed its hoarders

    When wealth is not coupled with generosity

  31. دعُوا الأرض يملكُها الكادحون

    فما خُلقت لسوى هؤلاء

    Leave the earth to be owned by its tillers

    For it was not created except for them

  32. هم استخرجوا التِّبر من بطنها

    وعاشوا على ظهرها أُسراء

    They extracted sustenance from its depths

    And lived happily upon its surface

  33. همو قطعٌ من ثراها تَدبُّ

    عليها، وهُم صحبُها الأوفياء

    They are pieces of its fruit that crawl upon it

    And they are its most faithful companions

  34. مساكنُم هي طول الحياةِ

    وأجداثُهم هي بعد الفناء

    Their homes are the length of their lives

    And their hoes are after their demise

  35. وشاطئهُم إذْ يحلُّ المصيفُ

    ومدفؤهم إذ يحلُّ الشتاء

    Their shore when summer arrives

    And their hearth when winter arrives

  36. وديوانهم هي عند الصباحِ

    ومضجعهم هي عند المساء

    Their book at dawn

    And their bed at dusk

  37. إذا ما غفوا فهْيَ نعم الوسادُ

    ونعم الوِطاءُ، ونعم الغطاء

    If they fall asleep it is a fine pillow

    And fine bedding, and fine cover

  38. ومن تُربها يُنضجون الطعامَ

    ومن عشبها يَنسجون الرداء

    And from its soil they bake food

    And from its grass weave clothes

  39. يعيشون، ليس لهم في سواها

    ولا في سوى من دحاها رجاء

    They live with no hope but it

    And none but its Maker to hope for

  40. وإن أجهدت زراعًا أرضهُ

    فأعيا، شفته بطيب الهواء

    And if it exhausted a farmer and his land

    Then revived him with good air

  41. ولم يلتمس من سواها علاجًا

    فكانت هي الداءَ وهْي الدواء

    He sought no cure but it

    So it was the illness and the remedy

  42. لأنعامها ودُّهُ صافيًا

    ويا رُبَّ ودٍ بغير صفاء

    For its cattle his love is pure

    O Lord, is there love without purity?

  43. وتهفو السَّوامُ إليه، كما

    هفا الأصدقاء إلى الأصدقاء

    And the beasts incline toward him

    As friends incline toward true friends

  44. ويقنعُ من عيشه بالكفاف

    ويجزي عليه بحسن الثَّناء

    And he is content with sufficient living

    And rewards it with fine praise

  45. ويدعو السماءَ لمن حرَّروهُ

    فتفتحُ أبوابها للدعاء

    And calls upon the heavens for his liberators

    So its doors open to his prayers

  46. أيا حارثَ الأرض، ما نُؤتَ يومًا

    بما لو تحمَّله الطَّودُ ناء

    O tiller of the earth, you will never be given

    What even mountains cannot bear

  47. صبرتَ على عنت الدهر دهرًا

    طويلاً، فجُوزيتَ حُسن الجزاء!

    You endured the tribulations of fate for so long

    And so you were rewarded with beautiful recompense!

  48. دعوتَ جمالاً، فلبَّى جمالٌ

    ومن كجمالٍ يلبِّي النداء؟

    You called for beauty, so beauty answered the call

    And what beauty does not answer the call?

  49. إذا الضُّعفاء أهابوا به

    يَهبُّ إلى نجدة الضعفاء

    When the weak are threatened it rushes to help the weak

    Driven by steely resolve that explains the arrow's piercing

  50. وتمضى به عزمةٌ من حديدٍ

    تُفسِّرُ للسهم معنى المضاء

    When it walks forward its steps will not

    Turn back to look behind

  51. إذا ما مشى قُدمًا في الطريق

    فلن يتلفَّتَ نحو الوراء
