1. حرَّرُوا الشعرَ من قُيود الخليلِ

    وحَمَوْه من فاعل وفَعول

They freed poetry from the shackles of al-Khalil,

And protected it from subject and object.

  2. لهمُ الله! ما لهم يَتْركون النـ

    ـثَر رهنًا بكل قيدٍ ثقيل؟

God bless them! Why do they leave prose

    Bound by every heavy shackle?

  3. أيها القومُ، حرِّروا النثر أيضًا

    لِتُتِمُّوا بذاك صنعَ الجميل

O people, free prose as well

    To complete this good deed.

  4. حرروا النثر من قَوَاعدِ صرفٍ

    مشكلات أعْيَتْ كبار العقول

Free prose from the rules of grammar

That have exhausted the greatest minds.

  5. حرروه من نحو زيِدٍ وعمروٍ

    وخلافٍ بين النحاة طويل

    م، من فَاعلٍ، ومن مفعول

    Subjects, and predicates.

  7. ما لتلك الأسماء: تُرْفَعَ كالها

    م، وهذي تُجَرُّ جَرَّ الذيول؟

Why are some nouns made marfou’ while others jar?

Why do some verbs complain while others do not?

    بات يشكو، وذلك غير عليل؟

    Speak without adhering

To branches or principles of rhetoric.

    ةِ فروع لضبطه أو أصول

And cast these dictionaries into obscurity,

Or into the Euphrates like the Mongols.

  10. واطرحوا هذه المعاجِمَ في الدجـ

    ـلةِ، أو في الفُرَات طَرْحَ المغول

And leave these academies to mourn

The loss of their vain members.

  11. واتركوا هذه المجامعَ ينعا

    ها لأصحابها نعاة الطُّلُول

O you who play with the letter ‘d’, gently!

    Little of the Arabs remains.

  12. أيها العابثون بالضاد، رفقًا

    ما تَبَقَّى للعُرْب غيرُ قليل

The loss of ‘d’ was an insider’s betrayal,

Far worse than a thousand foreigners.

  13. آفة الضاد مارق من بنيها

هُوَ شَرُّ من ألف ألف دخيل
