I stood questioning her: What ails her?

And I weep for the distance, her ruins!

I asked the inscriptions, as if the inscriptions

    Would answer the distance's question

    Without Ajdabiya, sermons that deafen

    And preoccupy its visitor, confused

Ajdabiya, has the day of resurrection come

And the earth shook with its tremors?

Has God resurrected those in the graves

And the earth brought out its burdens?

The bride of cities, what has afflicted her

In a night that tore her limbs apart?

That denied her rest at dawn

And crowned her with clouds of dread?

The meteors shuddered in the horizon when

They saw in Ajdabiya what horrified them

Her homes collapsed with the strikes

And I echoed the howls of their destruction

Death did not spare her youths

Nor did death pardon her elders

Death did not frighten her youths

Nor did death pardon her elders

Death did not frighten the lion of battle

So it pounced on the lions and their cubs

Death did not have mercy on the wearer of bracelets

Who had died embracing her children

If only the messenger of death

Had been gentle with the child when he took her

Blessed are You my Lord! You created souls

And predestined their lifespans in secrecy

How much wisdom You have in the universe

That You have locked away from the mind

Your tenderness, my Lord, destruction has spread

Across the earth and unleashed its torrents!

The earth cracked open to reveal its jinn

And drove its monsters to mankind

The sky poured embers over it

    Seeking to ignite it

Ajdabiya woke the conscience of existence

    And earned what it earned!

Except in the cause of Arabism, clearly

    Straightening its inclinations with art!

And a doctor's hand that stanches

The blood of its children, stifling its flows!

And money a generous Arab spends

On a family that has lost its money!

So Ajdabiya's people are our brothers

With our souls we redeem those in need

Certain of its people in their state

Even if time changes their circumstances

We shoulder burdens when hardships are imposed

Upon it, you see in it their bearer

Whenever the East is battered by ordeals

How many the likes of which the East has weathered

Nations that awoke after the long decline

    Mobilizing their heroes for glory

Casting off the yoke from their necks

And hurling their shackles into the sea

In their hatred of fetters, a girl almost

    Smashes her ankle bracelet

The nations of the East have sworn

Never to appease those who sought their humiliation

Weapons have become the girl's bracelet

And the child's toy, when it suits her

How many a nation thought the East

A fertile pasture, only to disappoint its hopes

    Vain safety drove it there

    To return licking its tail
