Farhat, companion of my youth,
and my fellow student from long ago,
and friend of days that passed
over us, gentler than the breeze,
«
in the shade of the School of
Judiciary, and within the shelter of Dar al-Ulum:
،
I have striven in speaking of you; a friend may
go too far for a cherished friend.
I thought your poetry was part of what
the ancients of Tamim had left behind.
!
How splendid your poetry is! It
is Arab to its very core.
Its weave is neither loose
to the ear nor feeble.
How splendidly you set your words
with grace! What wisdom is yours.
You taught the young through evil
the principles of upright character,
and through it shaped their souls
to sound taste.
،
I swear, the pearl beads
fashioned into an ordered necklace,
،
no, nor the gleaming cup
of wine in a companion’s hand,
are dearer than a noble
meaning cast in noble words.
