لقد كنت قبل اليوم عطشان بالظما

على ما هو الاسم العظيم تعظّما

Before today I was thirsty for water

From the glorious name I sought grandeur

وكنت له أطوي البلاد مشرّقاً

وغرباً شمالاً أو يميناً تعلّما

I would traverse the lands for it

East, west, north or south seeking knowledge

وكان كثير لي يقولون ذاك هو

بعربٍ من الأسما وبعض معجما

Many would tell me “That’s it”

In Arabic accents and some in lexicon

ولم أرَ من يشفي غليلي بنيلهِ

جميعاً ويسقي للفؤاد من الظما

But I never found one to quench my thirst

Or give drink to my heart from the water

وجدت به در اليواقيت كلها

تلألأ من حسن انتظام وَنَظَما

I found in it all precious gems

Shining beautifully with order and rhythm

إلى أن أتيت البحر عذباً وزاخراً

وحاط بما يلفى من الدر منظما

Until I came upon the fresh abundant sea

Encompassing the scattered pearls with harmony

يجيء به عجماً ويتلوه معرباً

لتفسيره أو قد يؤخر مقدما

It comes in foreign tongue and is recited in Arabic

To explain it or at times reversing the order

ولكنه لم يبق منه روايةً

رواها وثيق قد ترامُ تحتُّما

But no authentic narration remained

Transmitted reliably or permissible to touch

أخصُّ بذا حُصنَ الطريد لغوثنا

كتاب جليل القدر للقدر سلما

I hold dear to the impenetrable fortress of our savior

The honorable book to its destiny I submit

فخذه جميع العمر لا تك مُلْغياً

تلاوته وقتاً تعيش معظّما

Take it always, do not let it go

Reciting it you will live glorified

وقل يا إلهي دم حياةً لشيخنا

ونل ناظم الأبيات حسن مختما

And say O my God give life to our Shaykh

And grant the composer of verses a beautiful end
