إني بلا مُهلةٍ أقول في مَهَلٍ

ما لي وما للهوى عني بلا شُغُلِ

Without pause I say at leisure

What is mine and love's, no toil

إن قلت عنه أفرُّ جاء من أَمَمٍ

أو قلت صدَّ صُدوداً كرَّ عن عجلِ

If I shun it, it comes to me

If I block it, it insists on haste

أو سُلَّماً في السما ابتغيتُ أو نَفَقاً

في الأرض إن لم يجىءْ ضحىً مع الطَّفَلِ

A ladder to the sky I sought

Or tunnel underground, if at dawn, love comes not with the lad

نعمْ ولا يسلونَّ القلبَ إن عَدا

إذ يسمعنَّ كلام الفصل لا الهزلِ

Yes, they cheer not the heart, if they pass

Hearing the speech of earnest, not jest

وذاك حقٌّ به سَلْوانُ أجمع ما

ذوي الهوى عن هوى كالبدر معتدلِ

That is true, their cheer heals

Those in love, like the full moon poised

ذاك الكلام الذي الكِلام يبرئها

والفتق يرتقه وحلية العطل

That speech by which speech is healed

And the cleft is repaired and the brace of repose

ذاك الكلام الذي الأحلام حاسرةٌ

والحُلم والحِلمُ عنه جلَّ عن خطلِ

That speech which dreams unveil

And dream and reason from it stay clear of fault

ذاك الكلام الذي باقٍ له القِدم

شافي الظهور وباطن بلا مثل

That speech which endures, steps firm

Healing, manifest, essence unseen

هو الذي زان من يتلو وقرَّبه

وقُربُهُ أبداً لله والرّسُلِ

It adorns the reciter, draws him near

And nearness to God and messengers, ever

هو الذي شانئُهُ شان بُعدُهُمُ

في المُرْه والوُطْفِ عند الأعين النُّجلِ

It whose enemy is distanced

In blindness and delusion, to eyes unseeing

هو الدليل هو البرهان عُرْوَتُهُ

وُثقى فمستمسك به بمتصل

It is the proof, the argument, its grip

Is firm, so adhere to it, holding fast

ذكرٌ حكيمٌ صراطٌ مستقيمُ هدىً

وغيره من هدى هداه في ضللِ

Wise reminder, straight path, guidance

Other than its guidance leads astray into error

يرنو لقارئه بعين رحمته

يدنو به أبداً بغير منفصلِ

To its reader, it beams with merciful eye

Draws him near, eternally, with no divorce

يدنيه للحضرة العُليا ويكرمه

بمقعد الصِّدق عند مالك الأملِ

It brings him close to the Most High station

Honors him with the seat of truth, by the Owner of Hope

يُضيئه بالهدى قلباً وقالبه

والنور في قبره مصباح محتفلِ

It illuminates his heart and form with guidance

And light in his grave, a lamp in celebration

وفيه أنباء ما من قبلنا وبه

أنباءُ ما بعدنا وبيننا وَجَلِ

In it are tidings of what was before us

Tidings of what is after and between us and past

لا منه يشبع عالمٌ ولا خَلَقٌ

مع كثرة الرَّدِّ عُجْبٌ منه لم يزلِ

No scholar nor creation is sated

Continuous marvel, though oft read, ceases not

ولا تزيغ به الأهوا ولا لُسُنٌ

يَرى التباساً به أو داعي المللِ

By it, passions go not astray, nor tongues

See in it confusion, or call to tedium

ومن يقل صادقاً به ومن عملا

يُؤْجَرْ ويُنصرْ لدى قولٍ وفي عملِ

Who says true by it, and acts

Is rewarded and helped, in word and deed

فيه البلاغُ لقومٍ كان هَمُّهُمُ

عبادةُ الله من حافٍ ومُنْتَعلِ

In it is eloquence, for a people whose care

Was worship of God, barefoot or shod

ليس الغِنى دونه والفَقْرُ لا مَعَهُ

وشافعٌ قائدٌ لجنَّتين علِ

Without it no wealth, and with it no poverty

Intercessor and guide to two gardens on high

هذا ولو كان ألسن الخلائق لي

وعلمها والعقولُ الدَّهرَ ذا نَفَلِِ

This, though tongues of creation were mine

And their knowledge, and minds, for epochs untold

في مدحه لم يكن معشاره بلغا

كُلي وأحرى ببعض البعض في كَلَلِ

In praising it, they'd not reach a fraction

Each to each, and worthier of weariness in refrain

أنَّى وقد قيل ما فرَّطت فيه ولا

بمثله يأتِيَ الورى ذوو الخَولِ

How, when the best was said, and not neglected in it

And none can match it, ever, O timeworn souls

وكيف منه الحيا إلا الحياة به

إنزال غيثٍٍ به إكثار ذا الوشل

How have life, save by life through it

Sending down rain, multiplying the billowing dune

وكيف وهو كلام الله جلَّ علا

ومن أضيف إلى الكمال ينكملِ

How, when it is God's speech, Most High, Most Great

And one given perfection, is perfected

إني عبيد إله الخلق أجمعهِِ

وهو الوسيلة لي والحبل ذو الجدلِ

I am a slave of God, Lord of all creatures

It is my means and rope, strongly braided

قنعت فيه ولا قنعت ذا كبدٍ

حَرَّا ولا أقنَعَنْ بغير ما الرَّتَلِ

I am content with it, no rancor in my liver

Nor content with other than the march of caravans

وإنني لغمار المجد أطلبه

والنصر والعز بازدياد مُنكَمِلِ

Yes, I seek its abundant glory

And victory and might, in increments growing

وزد بأكمل ما الصلاة مستلماً

على الذي مُنْزَلٌ عليه في النّزلِ

And pray in full the prayer upon it sent

Upon the one it was revealed to, in revelation
