في ليلة صبغ الظلام أديَمهَا

فاحلَولَكَت وغطا الوجودَ سواد

In a night when darkness dyed its garments

And covered existence with blackness

لولا الكواكب في وميض شعاعها

لتدثرت بظلامها الأطواد

Were it not for the stars in their shining rays

All would be shrouded in gloom's darkness

عم السكونُ فكل شيءٍ هاديءٌ

وطغي على كل الأنام رقاد

Silence prevailed, everything tranquil

And slumber prevailed over all people

جاءَ الأمين مع البراق يقوده

برق تكوّن من سناه جواد

The Trustworthy came with Al-Buraq leading him

A lightning bolt formed of brilliant steeds

يجرى كأمواج الأثير بسرعة

كالفكر تقصر عنده الأبعاد

It sped like ether waves swiftly

Where dimensions shrink before it

حيث النبي بنومه مستغرق

قد أعوزته حشية ووساد

Where the Prophet was sunk in sleep

Deprived of mattress and pillow

ما كان بعد خديجة يحلو له

بيت يذكره بها ومهاد

After Khadija, nothing gave him comfort

A house to remind him of her and their bed

فأتي إلى دار أم هاني باغيا

سلوى وهل يسلو الحبيب فؤاد

So he came to Umm Hani's abode seeking

Solace - can a lover's heart find solace?

وهناك تأخذه على آلامه

سنَةٌ يطاردها العشيَّ سهاد

There a light slumber took him

Chased by wakefulness and drowsiness

وإذا بجبريل الأمين يهزه

قم للقاءِ فقد دنا الميعاد

When the Trustworthy Gabriel shook him

"Arise, the time of the meeting has come near"

فارتاع مما قد رآه ماثلا

ملك تجنح نوره وقاد

He shuddered at what he saw plainly before him

An angel whose light had wings and led

ماذا وراءك قال باسم الله قم

لله فيما قد قضاه مراد

"What lies behind you?" "By God's name, arise

For what God has decreed and intended"

فعلا على متن البراق ميمما

للقدس حيث تَهَجَّدَ العبّاد

Upon Al-Buraq's back he steadied himself

Heading for Jerusalem, home of devotion

فدنت له الأبعاد من آفاقها

وتقاربت مع بُعدِها الآباد

Dimensions drew near from their horizons

Though distant, settlements and towns

كالبرق كالفكر السريع تصورا

تُطوَى له الأغوار والأنجاد

Like lightning, like thought quick to envision

Depths and vastnesses shrink before it

فتريثا في طور سينا برهة

وببيت لحم إذ جرى الميلاد

Pausing a while at Mount Sinai

And Bethlehem where his birth occurred

وبثالث الحرمين صلى قانتا

بالأنبياء وهم له أنداد

And the Third of the Two Holy Sanctuaries he prayed

With the prophets, all his equals

موسى وعيسى والخليل جميعهم

فتصافح الأحفاد والأجداد

Moses, Jesus, and Abraham - all together

Ancestors and descendants embraced

وإلى السماء وقدسها عرجا معا

حيث الرجوم تقام والأرصاد

To the heavens and its holiness they ascended together

Where shooting stars fall and galaxies lie

فتفتحت أبوابها لقدومه

سبع على غير الرسول شداد

Its gates opened for his coming

Impregnable to others, shut tight

وهناك آدم مشفق متطلع

للأرض مما يصنع الأحفاد

There Adam anxious and hopeful

For the earth and all his offspring's deeds

يأتون ألوان الفساد ببغيهم

مَن أشركوا وتنصروا أو هادوا

They come in varied hues of corruption in their tyranny

Mushriks, Nasara, and Jews

تجري الدماءُ كأنهر ما بينهم

يؤذي الضعيف وتُوءَدُ الأولاد

Blood flows between them like rivers

The weak oppressed, children burnt

لا وازع يزع الذين تجبروا

فتألهوا بعتوهم أو كادوا

No deterrent deters the arrogant

So they claim divinity or near it

ورأى الملائك خشعا يعيا بما

يأتونه النساك والزهاد

The angels saw humbly, knowing

What would come from ascetics and the devout

والأنبياء والصالحون جميعهم

حيّوه والشهداءُ والعباد

The prophets, the righteous altogether

Greeted him, and the martyrs and worshippers

فأراه جل جلاله آياته ال

كبرى وليس لما رآه نفاد

He showed him His great signs, nothing

Compared to what he was shown without end

ودنا إلى الملأ العليّ وقبله

لم يأت هذاك المقام عِباد

He drew near to the Highest Assembly and kissed him

No worshipper attained that station

فوعى يقين الكائنات بلحظة

ما ليس تدرك حصره الآماد

And comprehended all creation in an instant

Beyond enumerating, counting or plumbing

هي حكمة المعراج عن كثب وعي

ما لا يعيه الدرس والتعداد

Such is the wisdom of the Ascension and the awareness

Of what neither study nor count can grasp

وكما بدا قد عاد قبل صباحه

لم يضنه الإسراءُ والإجهاد

As suddenly as he came, he returned before dawn

Undaunted by the journey and exertion

قد عاد أعلمَ مَن عليها حاملا

سر الهدى وسبيلُهُ الإرشاد

Returned, most knowledgeable of all in it

Bearing the secret of guidance and the path

لكنهم قد كذبوه لجهلهم

واستهزأ الإشراك والالحاد

But they denied him in ignorance

Mocked by polytheists and atheists

قاسوه يا لضلالهم بنفوسهم

كالنمل حين تظلها الاطواد

They tested him - how lost they were!

Like ants in the shade of dunes

وتفلسفوا بزمانهم ومكانهم

وحدودهم مما عليه اعتادوا

They philosophized about their time and place

And horizons they were accustomed to

وتجبروا والله بالغ أمره

كادوا فردَّ بنحرهم ما كادوا

And were arrogant - but God's command prevails

They almost perished by their own hands

وبرغمهم عم الهدى وتقاطرت

تترى له الأفواج والأفراد

But despite them, guidance spread

Throngs and individuals flocked to him

وأضاءَ هذا الكونَ نورُ سنائه

متألقا يهدي الجميع رشاد

And his brilliant sun lit up the universe

Guiding all with its radiance
