إِذا أَنا وافاني حِمامي وَمَضجَعي
وَسُوّي عَلَيَّ جَندَلٌ وَكَثيبُ
When Death comes to me with my pillow and bed,
And piles dirt and sand over my head,
فَكُلُّ وَفاءٍ عِندَ ذَلِكَ مَيِّت
وَكُلُّ رَجاءٍ عِندَ ذاكَ يَخيبُ
All loyalty will, in that hour, grow cold;
All longing will, at that time, lose its hold;
وَكُلُّ سِنانٍ في الأَنامِ وَلَهذَمٍ
وَمَسرودَةٍ وَجداً عَلَيَّ تَذوبُ
All teeth will, then, be blunted and destroyed,
And even sorrows over me be cloyed.
