لَو أَنَّ المَنايا حدنَ عَن ذي مَهابَةٍ
اَهبنَ حُضيراً يَومَ أَغلَقَ واقما
If death had spared the valiant man
Who went out one fateful day
أَطافَ بِهِ حَتّى إِذا اللَيلُ جَنَّهُ
تَبوأَ مِنهُ مَنزِلاً مُتَناعِما
It circled him until night descended
And settled in a cozy place
وَأَودَينَ بِالرِحالِ عُروَةَ قَبلَهُ
وَأَهلَكنَ صَيّادَ الفَوارِسِ هاشِما
With his belongings in his saddlebags
It destroyed the hunter of noble Hashim
وَهَوَّنَ وَجدي أَنَّني لَم أَكُن لَهُ
كَطَيرِ الشِمالِ يَنتف الريشَ حاتما
And made my grief easier since I was not
Like a northern bird plucking out feathers miserably
