O house of Asma in the valley's slope and expanse

Stronger fate prevails, as time’s march tramples all

Nothing of us remains but some leaning posts

And three pillars standing round a palm-trunk tall

The courtyard where the winds blow soft and slow

Sighing as exiles for their long lost home pine

A house no home, since my heart is not there

Though to it my steps draw near but cannot align

The darling I shun is not from spite or rage

But wariness, lest talkers do us defame

For I protect a dignity generously given

Despite warnings, as my nature disdains all blame

Counsel from one of wisdom, insight and care

An intelligent tester, far from doubts that mar

"Honor you've gained, take care not to stain it

A generous father, flawless lineage so far"

I commanded you to righteousness, now heed

I leave you wealthy, grown, and free to succeed

Leave the ways of folk with no virtue within

Hold to the morals of excellence and breeding

If called to betrayal or ordered thereto

Flee from it with all speed, turn heel and take leave

Do not withhold wealth from proper use

No base greed or excess, but give what’s deserved

For your heirs will not praise you, when you are gone

If they find but sour milk and palm wood to retrieve
