وَزَعَمْتَ أَنَّكَ فِي الكِتَابَةِ مُدْرِكٌ

سَعْيِي وَقُلْتَ سِلاَحُنَا الأَقْلاَمُ

You claimed that in writing you would catch up

To my efforts, and you said our weapon was the pen

هَيْهَاتَ تِلْكَ صِنَاعَةٌ مَمْزُوجَةٌ

فِيْهَا صَبَاحٌ وَاضِحٌ وَظَلاَمُ

Alas! That is a mixed up profession

In it there is a clear morning and darkness

هَذَا الحَدِيْدُ سِلاَحُ أَبْطَالِ الوَغَى

وَبِهِ يُرِيْقُ دِمَاءَنَا الحَجَّامُ

This iron is the weapon of the heroes of battle

And with it our bloodletter sheds our blood
