أَشْتَهي في الغِنَاءِ بُحَّةَ حَلْقٍ
ناعمِ الصَّوْتِ مُتْعَبٍ مَكْدُودِ
I yearn in singing for a tender voice
Soft-toned, fatigued, subdued,
كَأَنِيْنِ المُحِبِّ أَضْعَفَهُ الشَّوْ
قُ فَضَاهَى به أَنِيْنَ العَمِيْدِ
Like the moan of a lover whom desire has weakened,
So he vents it in the moan of the boss.
لا أُحِبُّ الأَوْتارَ تَعْلُو كما لا
أشْتَهي الضَّرْبَ لازِماً للعَمُودِ
I do not like strings rising high, nor
Do I desire rhythm binding the pillar.
وأُحِبُّ المُجَنَّبَاتِ كَحُبِّي
للمَبَادي مَوْصُولَةً بالنَّشِيْدِ
And I love subtlety like my love
For initiations connected with chanting,
كهُبوبِ الصَّبَا تَوَسَّطُ حالاً
بَيْنَ حَالَيْنِ شِدَّةً ورُكُودِ
Like the blowing of a breeze coming between
Two conditions, severity and stillness.
