كَلِفَ الفُؤَادُ بِشَادِنٍ أبْصَرْتُهُ

في مَأْتَمٍ يَبْكِي بِطَرْفٍ أَدْعَجِ

Burdened the heart for Shadid, whom I had seen

In deep mourning, weeping with reddened eyes

ما زال يَخْمِشُ خَدّهُ بِبَنَانِهِ

حتَّى تَنَقَّبَ وَرْدُهُ بِبَنَفْسَجِ

He kept scratching his cheek with his fingers

Until his rose complexion was marred henna-like
