يَنامُ الليلُ أسْهَرُهُ
وأشكوهُ وأشْكُرُهُ
The night sleeps; I stay awake through it.
And I complain of it, and I thank it.
وليلُ الصَّبِّ أطْوَلُهُ
على المعشوقِ أقْصَرُهُ
And the lovelorn one's longest night
is the shortest for the beloved.
كثيرُ الذّنْبِ إلا أَنْ
نَ فَرْطَ الحُبّ يَغْفِرُهُ
His faults are many, except that
love's excess forgives them.
أُكَاتِمُ حُبّهُ الواشِيْ
نَ والعَبَرَاتُ تُطْهِرُهُ
I conceal my love for him from the slanderers,
and tears purify it.
وأذْكُرُ خالِياً حُجَجي
وأَنْسَى حِيْنَ أَبْصِرُهُ
And, alone, I recall my arguments,
and forget them when I see him.
