1. What the howdahs of those full moons conceal

    of faces’ radiance and the night of hair!

  2. And what those necklines hide, which

    the gazelles of those palaces have displayed:

  3. beautiful throats of silver,

    encircled by catapults of camphor!

  4. Maidens bewitched me; Beauty wove

    gauzy robes of light for their bodies.

  5. Stringing for them rare treasures of pearl—

    bead-strings hung in place of curtains.

  6. Needing no jewelry, they are not adorned

    except with musk or blended perfume.

  7. I am lovesick for Ṣabwa and Tashāji,

    and Tajannī and her peer Manthūr.

  8. And my heart is utterly infatuated with one who inflames it,

    tormented by estrangement from one forsaken.

  9. So you two, spare me reproach for my longing

    for every coy, guileless one.

  10. In the beauty of the one I love, I have an excuse;

    and one deserving blame is not like one excused.
