1. سارِيَةٌ بين الدّيَاجي السّودِ

    مكحولةُ الأجْفَانِ بالسُّهُودِ

    A doe moving amidst the black robes,

    Her eyelids swollen with prostration,

  2. مُنْهَلَّةٌ بمائِهَا البَرُودِ

    مِثْلَ انْهِلاَلِ مُقْلِةِ العَمِيْدِ

    Flowing with her cool waters,

    Like the trickling of juice from the ripe dates,

  3. فَصَدَّقَتْ في الوَعْدِ والوَعِيْدِ

    كأنَّها إذا أَقْلَعَتْ لتُودِي

    True to her promise and her threat,

    As though when she strides away to bring

  4. سِرْبُ النَّعَامِ نافراً في البِيْدِ

    فالنَّبْتُ قد قامَ مِنَ اللُّحُودِ

    A flock of ostriches scattering through the waste,

    The vegetation has sprung from barrenness,

  5. يَمِيْسُ في رِدائِه الجدِيْدِ

    مُصَقَّلُ التوْرِيْسِ والتّورِيْدِ

    Swaying in its new raiment,

    Burnished weapons and coats of mail,

  6. غاديْتُها قبل غُدُوِّ السِّيِّدِ

    وقبل أن يَجْهَرَ بالتَّوْحِيْدِ

    I came to her before the lord's rising,

    And before the birds' chanting of God's oneness,

  7. بطائرٍ يُعَدّ في الأُسُودِ

    مُرَتَّبٍ كالْوَلَدِ الموْلُودِ

    Arranged like a newborn child,

    Erect like a valiant hero,

  8. منتصبٍ كالبطلِ النّجِيْدِ

    عيناه للمشَبِّهِ السَّعِيْد

    Her eyes for the happy likener

    Like two black beads on a necklace,

  9. كالحَبَّتَيْنِ السودِ في العُنْقُودِ

    رفعن لي بالطالع السعيد

    Raised for me the auspicious ascendant—

    Wild cows blocked my way like secluded virgins

  10. سدت ظباء كالعذارى الغيد

    في ضاحك الزَّهْرَةِ نِضْوِ العُودِ

    In the blossoming, fragrant lote-tree,

    So I proved to be one whose oath is binding,

  11. فَجُدْتُ جِيْدَ الحالِفِ المرْدُودِ

    حتى سَرَقْتُ الرّيْحَ مِنْ بَعِيْدِ

    Until I stole the wind from afar

    And after descending became ascending,

  12. وَصِرْتُ بَعْدَ الهَبْطِ في الصُّعُودِ

    فانحَطَّ مِثْلَ الحَجَرَ الصَّيْخُودِ

    Then I fell like a crumbling rock,

    Scattered like something unique,

  13. فَبُدِّدَتْ تَبَدُّدَ الفَرِيْدِ

    ثُمَّ خَلاَ بكبشِها الفَرِيْدِ

    Then her magnificent ram was left

    To gore with his weapons and armor—

  14. يَنْشِبُ في يافُوخِهِ والجِيْدِ

    مَخَالِباً أمْضَى مِنَ الحَدِيْدِ

    Claws sharper than iron—

    Blessed is the unique one with no match,

  15. بُورِكَ من فَرْدٍ بلا نَدِيْدِ

    يَرْمي بِهِ مِذْكَارَ يَوْمِ عِيْدِ

    Who throws at the festive day

    From the Almighty and the Supreme

  16. من القَدِيْرِ وَمِنَ القَدِيْدِ

    وعامرِ الطَّاجِنِ والسَّفُودِ

    Provisioner of food and prostration.
