مِحْبَرَةٌ جَادَ لِي بِهَا قَمَرٌ

مُسْتَحْسَنُ الخَلْقِ مُرْتَضَى الحُلُقِ

A pen gifted to me by a gracious moon

Of beautiful creation and pleasing voice

جَوْهَرَةٌ خَصَّنِي بِجَوْهَرَةٍ

نَاطَتْ بِهِ المَكْرُمَاتُ فِي عُنُقِي

A jewel that adorned me with a jewel

Honors draped around my neck

بَيْضَاءُ وَالْحِبْرُ فِي قَرَارَتِهَا

أَسْوَدُ كَالْمِسْكِ جِدُّ مُنْعَبِقِ

White, while ink within its reservoir

Black as musk, intense in fragrance

مِثْلُ بَيَاضِ العُيُونِ زَيَّنَهُ

مُسْوَدُّ مَا شَابَهُ مِنَ الحَدَقِ

Like the whiteness of eyes, adorned with

Darkness of saturated pupils

كَأَنَّمَا حِبْرُهَا إِذَا نَثَرَتْ

أَقْلاَمُنَا طَلَّهُ عَلَى الوَرَقِ

As if its ink, when scattered

Our pens drawing it on paper

كُحْلٌ مَرَتْهُ الدُّمُوعُ مِنْ مُقَلٍ

نُجْلٍ فَأَوْفَتْ بِهِ عَلَى يَقَقِ

Kohl diluted with tears from an applicator

Twilight, thus completing it on the eyelids

خَرْسَاءُ لَكِنَّهَا تَكُونُ لَنَا

عَوْنَاً عَلَى عِلْمِ أَفْصَحِ النُّطُقِ

Voiceless, but it will be for us

An aid in mastering the most eloquent speech
