وَنَدِيْمٍ مُخَالِفٍ
لاَيَشَا الدَّهْرَ مَا أَشَا
And a contrary drinking companion,
Who never wants what I want:
هُوَ في الصَّحْوِ لِي أَخٌ
وَعَدُوٌ إِذَا انْتَشَى
When sober, he is a brother to me,
And an enemy when he is drunk.
واقْتَرَحْتُ العَشَاءَ يَوْ
ماً عَلَيْهِ فَأُدْهِشَا
And I suggested supper one—
day to him, and he was dumbfounded
سَاعَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي
العَشَا يُورِثُ العَشَى
For a while; then he said to me:
"Supper brings on night blindness."
