My longing for Egypt once kept me sleepless.
My longing for Egypt kept me awake
So today I have returned, and Egypt is once more my home.
But today I have returned and Egypt is my home again
I go in the morning to spacious Giza for morning wine,
I head joyfully to Giza in the morning
At times; at others I make my way toward Shiraz.
And roam to Sheraz for a while
While I vie with a chief in his rank,
While I ascend in rank and position
Then by evening I am reckoned a wine-seller in the taverns.
I recline and count bottles in taverns
So my mornings belong to the bureaus, and my return
My mornings are for work and evenings for relaxation
Is to houses of doll-like beauties who play the strings,
To the homes of charming dolls who play the strings
And of a young gazelle of Coptic stock who ties
And a Copt named Shadid who connects
A girdle between the sand dune and the bān-tree branch.
Branches and beads into a necklace
As for Time, I have kept company with its wildness,
As for time, I have seen its bitterness
And I have fulfilled desires and wishes.
And spent nights and cycles
