1. Your virtues, born of their noble roots,

    vie with the stars in their radiance.

  2. And seekers of bounty have no succor but you,

    as though you guarantee their livelihoods.

  3. And the night of Jesus the Messiah’s birth

    has called on me to honor its covenant.

  4. So there are my pots upon its fire,

    and my fruit upon its platters.

  5. And the daughter of time has been brought forth

    from the curtained chamber, unveiled for her lovers.

  6. And the market has sprung to life with women singers,

    and men singers, in full swing.

  7. So grant me a gift—may souls be your ransom—

    through your bounty, sustenance for their last breaths:

  8. yellow counterparts, grown enchanting

    through the delicate blue of their pupils;

  9. and things like vipers, when set alight,

    in a blaze, for fear of their antidote.
