1. Who, do you think, will do me justice against a friend

who forever wears the garb of one easily wearied?

  2. Whenever the reproachers gather round him,

he persists in hastily accepting what they say.

  3. And the tale-bearers—woe to them!—never tire

of severing the cord of union with a devoted friend.

  4. How could someone's love not change when he has

an eye and an ear for the reproacher?

  5. If he could see my love for him within my heart,

he would always meet me with kindness.

  6. No, and no honor for the reproachers!

I will not turn away before the evidence is clear.

  7. I will not turn away in suspicion of my friend.

My family and his belong to one tribe—

  8. souls knit together by brotherhood,

all professing, as their creed, love for the Messenger,

  9. the dispeller of darkness and guide of humankind,

and for the appointed successor—his companion—and the Chaste Lady.

  10. This one's merit is his companion's, while the enemy

    remains downcast with burning rancor.

  11. Between us is a bond; none can sever

its like through an enemy's talk and hearsay.

  12. And our souls' mingling in purity

is like the mingling of falling rain with wine.

  13. Yet an envious person may persist

in meddlesomely coming between the two.

  14. And he will not attain what he hopes for;

no, nor will he lead them both astray from the path.

  15. O my brother, and O my strong arm in calamities,

and you through whom I attain every wish,

  16. and who shares with me in the old

and new among my white forehead-blazes and white leg-markings,

  17. remain true to your affection for me as long as you live.

Do not seek—may you be guided—any substitute for it.

  18. There is no distance between us in glory:

each is his brother's means of access.
