Baghdad we came complaining so hear my complaint

Pour us comfort in two glasses and come closer

Baghdad we came as its riverbanks are barren

And the water around you is a chain of gold

So who do we blame if we excuse you from blame

While in us are wounds that have not yet healed

Before you is glory and history so ignite

A fire of love not a fire of firewood

Before you is glory and history so emerge

A sun like your era or if you wish then argue

From where do I start or from where is my end

The beginning suffers from the grip of wonder

Give my eyes from your eyes an ignited

Radiance of light or an unveiling of the hidden

Give a vein so in the artery there is room

To it listens so the most beautiful line of prose

Poetry stopped working until it almost embarrassed me

And my sea of sorrows almost betrayed me

A gang of grudges wrongly accuse you today

I pardon more than the betrayal and lies

They do not accept you as a warm chest to a brother

Nor as a good lineage’s honest sweat

They distort history through you so beware

Of innocence and be cautious of tribulation

They lose arts from you we know

Poetry and prose and literature of literature

As if Baghdad is no more than anguish

And pleasure became after dates and raisins

As if Baghdad is glories and an epic

Of hatred for Islam and Arabs

The honesty of love is that I gift you from my literature

A letter of blame in a cup of complaint

And if I complain to you when embracing grew difficult

And a union with you without cause grew difficult

You killed in us a glimmer, increasing the broken

Who wrangles dawn on the crutch of fatigue

You wasted a path to the farthest intentionally

So hatred drove you to vendettas like sin

And your conquest was glory before Andalusia

The conquest changed O dispossessed of rage
