1. النيلُ من نشوة الصهباءِ سَلْسلُهُ

    وساكنو النيلِ سُمّار ونُدْمانُ

    The Nile flows in rapture from the white Sahara

    And Nile dwellers are ever joyous and blissful

  2. وخفقةُ الموجِ أشجانٌ تُجاوبها

    من القلوب التفاتاتٌ وأشجان

    And the surging wave responds to the throbbing hearts

    With sympathies and passions profound

  3. كلُّ الحياةِ ربيعٌ مشرق نَضِرٌ

    في جانبيه وكلُّ العمرِ رَيْعان

    All life is a verdant, radiant spring

    On both banks, and time is ever renewed

  4. تمشي الأصائلُ في واديه حالمةً

    يحفّها موكبٌ بالعطر ريّان

    The roots march in its valley, dreaming

    Escorted by a procession of aromatic fragrance

  5. وللخمائل شدوٌ في جوانبهِ

    له صدىً في رحاب النفسِ رنّان

    And to the date palms, there is singing on its banks

    With an echo in the expanse of the soul, melodious

  6. إذا العنادلُ حيّا النيلَ صادحُها

    والليلُ ساجٍ، فصمتُ الليلِ آذان

    When the nightingales greet the Nile vociferously

    And the night dons its black gown, the silence of night is all ears

  7. حتى إذا ابتسم الفجرُ النضيرُ لها

    وباكرتْه أهازيجٌ وألحان

    Until the pure dawn smiles at them

    And awakens them with songs and tunes

  8. تحدّر النورُ من آفاقه طَرِباً

    واستقبلتْه الروابي وَهْو نشوان

    Light descends from its horizons, thrilled

    And the meadows receive it, exuberant and elated

  9. تدافع النيلُ من علياء ربوتهِ

    يحدو ركابَ الليالي وَهْوَ عجلان

    The Nile surges from the loftiness of its source

    Galloping the steeds of nights, hasty and swift

  10. ما ملَّ طُولَ السُّرى يوماً وقد دُفنِتْ

    على المدارج أزمانٌ وأزمان

    Never once bored of the lengthy journey, over the stairs

    Eras have been buried, eras upon eras

  11. ينساب من ربوة عذراءَ ضاحكةٍ

    في كلّ مغنًى بها للسحر إيوان

    It flows from the hill of a smiling virgin

    In every valley it passes, the magic has a palace

  12. حيث الطبيعةُ في شرخ الصِّبا ولها

    من المفاتن أترابٌ وأقران

    Where nature is in the prime of youth

    With graces and charms aplenty

  13. وِشاحُها الشَّفقُ الزاهي وملعبُها

    سهلٌ نضيرٌ وآكامٌ وقيعان

    Its scarf, the vivid sunset, its playground

    A tender plain, hills and valleys

  14. وربَّ وادٍ كساه النورُ ليس لهُ

    غيرُ الأوابدِ سُمّارٌ وجيران

    And the light has clothed many a valley that has

    None but hermits and neighbors dwelling in it

  15. وربّ سهلٍ من الماء استقرَّ بهِ

    من وافد الطيرِ أسرابٌ وَوُحْدان

    And many a plain the water has settled in

    Receiving migrating birds in droves and solitary

  16. ترى الكواكبَ في زرقاء صفحتهِ

    ليلاً إذا انطبقتْ للزهر أجفان

    You see the stars in its blue expanse

    When lids close over the flowers by night

  17. وفي حِمى جبل الرجّافِ مُختلَبٌ

    للناظرين وللأهوال ميدان

    And on the mountain of Rajjaf there lies hidden

    For spectators, a theatre of horrors and terrors

  18. إذا صحا الجبلُ المرهوبُ رِيعَ لهُ

    قلبُ الثرى وبدتْ للذعر ألوان

    When the dreaded mountain shakes violently

    The belly of earth heaves, and terror displays its hues

  19. فالوحشُ ما بين مذهولٍ يُصفّدهُ

    يأسٌ وآخرُ يعدو وَهْوَ حيران

    So beasts between paralyzed and terrified

    And others fleeing confused and perplexed

  20. ماذا دهى جبلَ الرجّافِ فاصطرعتْ

    في جوفه حُرَقٌ وارتجّ صَوّان

    What has provoked Mount Rajjaf so that its insides

    Were set ablaze and its boulders shook?

  21. هل ثار حين رأى قيداً يكبّلُهُ

    على الثرى فتمشّتْ فيه نِيران

    Did it erupt upon seeing shackles chaining it

    To the ground, so flames ignited within?

  22. والنيلُ مُندفِعٌ كاللحن أرسلَهُ

    من المزامير إحساسٌ ووجدان

    And the Nile surges like a tune composed

    By lutes of feeling and passion sincere

  23. حتى إذا أبصر «الخرطومَ» مُونقةً

    وخالجتْه اهتزازاتٌ وأشجان

    Until it sees Khartoum adorned

    Stirred by tremors and yearnings intense

  24. وردّد الموجُ في الشطّين أغنيةً

    فيها اصطفاقٌ وآهات وحرمان

    And the waves echo on both banks a song

    Of longing, sighs, and deprivation

  25. وعربد الأزرقُ الدفّاق وامتزجا

    روحاً كما مزج الصهباءَ نشوان

    And the two blues, the azure and indigo sea, blended

    Like the white and blue Sahara blend in harmony

  26. وظلَّ يضرب في الصحراء مُنْسرباً

    وحولَه من سكون الرملِ طُوفان

    And it flowed spreading in the desert

    While stillness of sands stirs all around

  27. سارٍ على البِيد لم يأبه لوحشتها

    وقد ثوتْ تحت سترِ الليلِ أكوان

    Flowing over the expanse unbothered by its desolation

    As creation lies under night’s cover, hidden from view

  28. والغيمُ مَدَّ على الآفاق أجنحةً

    ونام في الشطّ أحقافٌ وغُدران

    And clouds outspread their wings over horizons

    While dunes and prairies in the riverbanks sleep

  29. والليلُ في وحشة الصحراءِ صومعةٌ

    مَهيبةٌ وتلالُ البيدِ رهبان

    And night in the desert’s wilderness is like a cloister

    Foreboding, with desert mounds like monks

  30. إذا الجنادلُ قامتْ دون مسربهِ

    أرغى وأزبد فيها وَهْوَ غضبان

    When the cataracts stand guard over its course

    Foaming and frothing, it rages wrathfully

  31. ونشّرَ الهولَ في الآفاق مُحتدِماً

    جمَّ الهياجِ كأنّ الماءَ بركان

    Spreading terror in the horizons, fuming

    As if the waters were erupting volcanoes

  32. وحوَّل الصخرَ ذَرّاً في مساربهِ

    فبات وَهْو على الشطّين كُثبان

    And turned rocks into specks in its streams

    To become overnight dunes on both banks

  33. عزيمةُ النيلِ تُفني الصخرَ فورتُها

    فكيف إن مسّه بالضيم إنسان

    The will of the Nile destroys rocks, its outbursts

    So how when a human harms it?

  34. وانساب يحلم في وادٍ يُظلّلهُ

    نخلٌ تهدّل في الشطّين فَيْنان

    And it flowed dreaming in a valley shaded

    By palms dangling on the banks, ever lush

  35. بادي المهابةِ شمّاخٌ بمفرقهِ

    كأنما هو للعلياء عنوان

    Unique in its majesty, its patterns are like

    Signposts pointing to the Highest Authority
