  1. شردت يا هذا شرود البعير

    وطالت الغيبة عند الأمير

    You wandered, O this one, the wandering of a camel,

    And the absence at the prince grew long.

  2. أقمت يومين وليلهما

    وثالثاً تحبى ببرٍ كثير

    You stayed two days and their night,

    And a third mingling with much goodness.

  3. يوم عريبٍ مع احسانها

    ان طالت الأيام يوم قصير

    A day of an Arab with his kindness—

    If the days grew long a day is short—

  4. لها أغانٍ غير مملولة

    منها ولا تخلق عند الكرور

    It has songs not boring,

    Of it, and it does not breed with disdain.

  5. غير ملومٍ يا أبا جعفر

    أن توثر اللهو ويوم السرور

    Not blamed, O Abu Ja'far,

    That you prefer frivolity and a day of joy.

  6. فأجعل لنا منك نصيباً فما

    ان كنت عن مجلسنا بالنفور

    So make for us from you a share, so what

    If you were about our gathering aloof,

  7. وصر الينا غير ما صاغر

    أصارك الرحمن خير المصير

    And come to us not lowered,

    May God make you the best fate.

  8. ان لم يكن عندي غناءٌ ولا

    عودٌ فعندي القمر بالنرد شير

    If there is not with me singing or

    A lute, then with me is the moon with stars abound,

  9. والذكر بالعلم الذي قد مضى

    بأهله حادث صرف الدهور

    And the mention with knowledge that has passed

    With its people the changing of times.

  10. وهو جديد عندنا نهجه

    أعلامه تحويه منا الصدور

    And it is new with us its path—

    Its signs contain it from us the breasts.

  11. فالحمد لله على كل ما

    أولى وأبلى ولربي الشكور

    So praise to God for every

    First and last, and to my Lord the Thankful.
