1. إيه يا بلبل ما هذا الجمود

    أين تغريدك ما بين الشجر

    O nightingale, what is this stillness?

    Where is your singing amidst the trees?

  2. ابعث الألحان في هذا الوجود

    واملأ الدنيا نشيدا أو سمر

    Send melodies into this existence,

    And fill the world with a song or chat.

  3. لا تطق هما لحرب أو سلام

    واترك الدنيا بأهليها تموج

    Bear not worries of war or peace,

    And leave the world to its turmoil,

  4. في عراك دائم أو في خصام

    تحت سطح البحر أو فوق المروج

    In constant strife or quarrel,

    Beneath the sea's surface or atop meadows.

  5. سيمرون كما مر الكرام

    في طريق ما لهم منه عروج

    They will pass as the noble passed,

    On a path from which they will not ascend.

  6. لهف نفسي هل ترى الخير يسود

    فيه عدل اللَه ما بين البشر

    My soul yearns - do you see good prevailing,

    In it God's justice among people?

  7. أم يسود الشر والدنيا تعود

    لحياة ليس فيها مستقر

    Or does evil prevail and the world returns

    To a life without stability?

  8. إيه يا بلبل قد طال الأمد

    عن لقانا يوم كنا في وفاق

    O nightingale, long has been the period

    Since we met, when we were in harmony.

  9. كنت في دنيا جمال استمد

    منك وحي الشعر في حسن السياق

    You were in a world of beauty, deriving

    From you poetry's inspiration in good style.

  10. فغشى بعدك عيني الرمد

    وأصاب القلب هم لا يطاق

    Then after you, cataracts covered my eyes,

    And sorrow afflicted the heart, unbearable.

  11. وغدا الجسم نحيلا مثل عود

    وكسى الرأس بياض مزدهر

    My body grew emaciated like a stick,

    And my head was cloaked in blossoming whiteness.

  12. هكذا أحيا وفكري في شرود

    حائرا بين قضاء وقدر

    Thus I live, my thoughts in distraction,

    Lost between destiny and fate.

  13. عن لي يا طير من لحنك ما

    يبعث الآمال في النفس اليؤوس

    Chant to me, O bird, a melody

    That awakens hopes in the despairing soul.

  14. واحك لي هل زرت قوما حكما

    دهرنا فيهم بأحكام المجوس

    And tell me, did you visit wise people

    Whose era we lived in like Magi rulings?

  15. هل رأيت الوكر أم قد هدما

    وغدا سكانه تحت الرموس

    Did you see the nest or was it demolished,

    And its dwellers now under the debris?

  16. قل لي الحق ولا تخشى وعيد

    واسقني الكأس بحلو أو بمر

    Tell me the truth, fear no threats,

    And give me the cup, bitter or sweet.

  17. إنما الدنيا نحوس وسعود

    طعمها سيان عند المصطبر

    The world is but misfortune and joy,

    Its taste the same to the resigned.

  18. فانبرى البلبل يشدو نغما

    لا كشدو الطير أيام الربيع

    The nightingale began singing a tune,

    Not like birds' singing in spring days.

  19. إنه السحر بفيه انسجما

    بفصيح اللفظ في نظم بديع

    It is sorcery in which prose is woven

    With eloquent words in wondrous composition.

  20. قال والحزن عليه ارتسما

    وبدت في العين آثار الدموع

    He said, and sadness was etched upon him,

    And the tears' traces showed in his eyes:

  21. ارع لي سمعا ومولاي شهيد

    إن في القصة ما يدمي الحجر

    "Listen to me, my martyred Master,

    For in the tale is what makes rocks bleed.

  22. عشت دهرا وسط غاب لا وجود

    فيه للحب ولا جنس الثمر

    I lived an age amidst a jungle with no existence

    Of love or fruitful plants within it.

  23. ذئبه يعوي إذا جن الظلام

    فتصيح البوم مثل المنذرة

    Its wolf howls when the darkness falls,

    So the owl screams like a warner.

  24. وزئير الأسد في تلك الأكام

    مثل غارات الليالي المقمرة

    And the lion's roar in those thickets

    Is like raids in the moonlit nights.

  25. وإذا الشمس رمت بعض السهام

    أصبحت غربانه منتشرة

    And when the sun hurls some arrows,

    Its crows scatter about.

  26. وعلت في الجو صيحات القرود

    والذي في باطن الأرض ظهر

    And the screams of monkeys rise up,

    As what's inside the earth emerges.

  27. عالم لا خير فيه وصعيد

    ساءت العشرة فيه والمقر

    A world of no good, a barren land,

    Where company was evil and residence wretched.

  28. مرت الأيام في طول السنين

    حافلات بالمآسي المؤلمة

    The days passed over the years,

    Laden with painful tragedies.

  29. ذات صبح برح الوجد الكمين

    فسرت في الغاب منى نغمه

    One morn, fervor awoke dormant within me,

    So I roamed the jungle, chanting.

  30. هي تسبيح وشكوى وأنين

    وهي للقلب صلاة قيمه

    It is glorification, lament, and moan,

    And for the heart, prayers of great value.

  31. تبعث الإيمان في النفس الشرود

    وتعيد الصبر للقلب الضجر

    It restores faith in the distracted soul,

    And brings back patience to the bored heart."

  32. ردد الغاب صدى ذاك النشيد

    في سكون الفجر كالسحر انتشر

    The jungle echoed that chant

    In the stillness of dawn, spreading like sorcery.

  33. سمعوا اللحن فهاجوا ثائرين

    ثم قالوا وسط صيحات الغضب

    They heard the tune and rose up enraged,

    Then said amidst shouts of anger:

  34. اقتلوا الساحر أيان يكون

    ابحثوا عنه أذيقوه العطب

    "Kill this sorcerer, wherever he may be!

    Search for him, make him taste torment,

  35. قبلما يمسخكم مستأنسين

    إنه الساحر يأتي بالعجب

    Before he bewitches you into being sociable,

    He is the sorcerer who brings wonders."

  36. فاعتراني منهم خوف شديد

    وتواريت بأوراق الشجر

    So great fear seized me because of them,

    And I hid amongst the leaves.

  37. وإذا الشحرور يأتي من بعيد

    وينادي يا عصافير السفر

    And there the evildoers came from afar,

    Calling: "O birds of travel!"

  38. حمت في الجو فألفيت الرفاق

    جوقة من عندليب وهزار

    I took refuge in the air and found comrades—

    A troupe of bulbuls, jesters,

  39. وشحارير ضناها الاشتياق

    وبخاتي وقعاري وكنار

    Nightingales, yearning brought them,

    Warblers, buntings and canaries.

  40. طرن أسرابا غداة الجو راق

    صادحات بأناشيد الفخار

    They flew in flocks at dawn's first light,

    Crying out triumphant melodies.

  41. مسرعات في هبوط وصعود

    في ضياء الشمس في نور القمر

    Speeding in descent and ascent

    In the sun's glow, the moonlight's shine.

  42. قاصدات وطن الشيخ الشهيد

    فارس الهيجا وحاميها عمر

    Heading to the land of the martyred elder,

    The knight Al-Hayjah, protected by Umar.

  43. كبرت أسرابنا لما رأت

    روضة أنهارها من سلسبيل

    Our flocks grew when they saw

    Its brook's meadow of Salsabeel,

  44. جنة أشجارها قد أينعت

    جوها صاف وواديها جميل

    Its paradise trees fruitful,

    Its air pure, its valley beautiful.

  45. طيرها شاد بأنغام شجت

    سامعيها بعد صمت مستطيل

    Its birds sing with stirring tunes,

    Enchanting listeners after prolonged silence.

  46. فدخلنا الوكر في يوم سعيد

    وقضيناها سويعات غرر

    So we entered the nest one blessed day,

    And spent blithe moments within it.

  47. بينما نحن على الماء ورود

    إذ ينادي النحس فينا بالصدر

    While we were atop the flowers,

    Misfortune called out ominously.

  48. فرق البين ولم أقض وداع

    وتركت القلب في الوكر رهين

    It separated us—I couldn't bid farewell,

    Leaving my heart hostage in the nest.

  49. عدت للغاب ولو تدري السباع

    أنني عدت لهاجت في العرين

    I returned to the jungle, if only predators knew

    I had returned, they would have raged in their den.

  50. غير أن الصمت وهو المستطاع

    يخفني عنهم فبي لا يشعرون

    But silence, which I can maintain,

    Hides me from them, unaware of me.

  51. هكذا الدنيا إذا والت فعيد

    وإذا ولت فشر مكفهر

    Thus is the world—if it brings a feast,

    And if it changes, then raging misfortune.

  52. حسبنا الصبر لها حتى تجود

    بالمنى والدهر ولاد العبر

    Patience with it is enough, until it yields

    The wishes, as life brings lessons."

  53. أطرق البلبل في صمت عميق

    ورأيت الدمع في العينين جال

    The nightingale fell silent, profoundly,

    And I saw tears flowing in his eyes.

  54. قلت لا تيأس ففي الجو بروق

    لامعات وغيوم في الشمال

    I said: "Do not despair, for in the sky are

    Gleaming lightning bolts and clouds in the north.

  55. فإذا ما ارعدت فهي حريق

    تسعر الأعداء في تلك التلا

    When they thunder, they will set the enemies ablaze

    In those hills."

  56. وإلى أوطاننا ثان نعود

    إن يشاء الله في وقت مسر

    And back to our homelands, God willing, we shall return

    If He wills, at a joyous time."

  57. قال أستودعك اللَه المجيد

    وإلى أن نلتقي أخرى وفر

    He said: "I entrust you to God the Majestic.

    Until we meet again, farewell my friend."

  58. فتلفت يمينا وشمال

    باحثا عن بلبل في حيرتي

    He glanced right and left,

    Searching for the nightingale in my confusion.

  59. وإذا البلبل من نسج الخيال

    وخيالي حلم في يقظتي

    And there the nightingale was but a figment,

    And my imagination a dream in my wakefulness.

  60. لم أجد غير تلال ورمال

    كنت فيها هائما في وحدتي

    I found nothing but hills and sands,

    In which I roamed, alone in my solitude.

  61. باكيا حينا كما يبكي الوليد

    صابرا طورا على وخز الإبر

    Weeping at times like a wailing infant,

    Patient at times, enduring pricks of needles.

  62. ساخطا آنا على هذا الوجود

    يائسا حينا وطورا منتظر

    Angry at times at this existence,

    Despairing at times, at times hopeful.
