1. What is it you hope for from me,

    O sparrow?

  2. Stay away from me, I beg you;

    I am forsaken.

  3. Before you, the garden calls

    to the songster among birds:

  4. Longing is sweet for the morning visitors;

    how fine is the final abode!

  5. For whoever desires my affection,

    a paradise for visitors;

  6. and my flowers, held in hands,

    astonish the onlookers.

  7. Fly, if you wish, and sing,

    singing, full of joy;

  8. and stay away from me, I beg you;

    I am forsaken.

  9. Before you is the sea, its roar

    angry and thunderous.

  10. Before you is the river, its murmur

    pleasing in rhythm.

  11. Before you are the flowers; their fragrance

    has wafted sweetly abroad.

  12. Before you are the spreading trees; their birds

    delight the ears.

  13. Repeat your song thrice, and twice,

    and strike the tanbur.

  14. And stay away from me, I beg you;

    I am forsaken.

  15. Leave me in peace, alone,

    O songster.

  16. I lament abandonment and display

    the air of one at ease.

  17. My delight is my tears and my yearning,

    like drinking wine.

  18. Indeed, for me, abandonment holds

    the delight of souls.

  19. Hear my counsel and leave me;

    do not be vain.

  20. And stay away from me, O bird;

    I am forsaken.
