1. She grew bewildered, and her physician and her remedy were gone.

    Alas for my soul! How long her suffering endures!

  2. Waywardness controlled her reins, so she rebelled

    With her wildness, and her ailments multiplied.

  3. She complains, hoping complaint may ease what ails her.

    So her hope in the one she complains to is dashed.

  4. And she returns, patient despite the reluctance within her.

    And patience in this existence is her consolation.

  5. She finds misery a delight, and even if she

    Saw bliss, her misery would lie within it.

  6. Glory be to You, O God! For a wise purpose You willed

    To make souls with differing desires.
