We suffer on the night of ordeals
And melt on the decline of time
We flow colors exquisitely
Between creed and homeland
We sang at dawn and said
And wrote in the eye of time
We came from the dusty land
With letters to the heart of Yemen
And we came out of the cage of life
Like the soul's exit from the body
We compose so we eulogize history
And roam the earth without residence
The plateaus of poetry are our homes
And the emergence of joy and sorrow
So poetry is an ordeal for the rational
And the earth is the abode of the tested
Poets of the earth, did the embers
Of awakening drown in weakness?
Poets of the earth, did the cities
Of the free secede from cities?
A Levant torn in a Levant
Aden longing for an Aden
And a Gulf searching for another face
To sell without a price
And Jerusalem's martyr in my chest
A beloved dreaming of shroud
I came from the past free
But the present shackled me
I cry, torn to pieces
With despair, who will unite me?
Who will examine my chest
My head, who will understand me?
My people reap me, oh my sorrow
From my land, who will cultivate me?
My father taught me love of the land
I wish my father had not taught me
