1. من ناشد لي جؤذر الرمل فقد

    صاد بأشراك الهوى قلبي وصد

    The one who complained to me of the piercing sands

    Has ensnared my heart in the traps of passion and blocked it

  2. علام يا ريم قتلت عامداً

    بطرفك الصب ولم تعط القود

    Why, O Rim, did you intentionally kill

    With your enchanting glance, yet not pay blood money

  3. يا مالكاً قلبي ونار حسنه

    ما بين أحشائي لهيبها اتقد

    O you who possess my heart and the fire of your beauty

    Burns within my being

  4. لو كان قسيس النصارى شاهداً

    شعلة خديك سواها ما عبد

    If the Christian priest were a witness

    No flame but yours would he worship

  5. صورك الحسن لدي قبلةً

    صلى لها قلبي غراماً وسجد

    The image of your beauty is my qibla

    To it my heart prays passionately and bows down

  6. فرحت في غرامه فرداً كما

    بحسنه بين الورى قد إنفرد

    I rejoiced in passion as an individual

    For your beauty among mankind is matchless

  7. حل عزى صبري في لواحظ

    نفاثة السحر لقلبي بالعقد

    The remedy for my patience lies in seeing

    The magic of your glance that has captured my heart

  8. سلطه الحسن علينا مذ علا

    وفرته تاجاً من الشعر عقد

    Your beauty has power over us since it shone

    And abundant hair adorned it like a crown

  9. أقام جسمي غرضاً فمذ رمى

    سهام عينيه سواي ما قصد

    It made my body a target, so when

    The arrows of your eyes shot me, none else they intended

  10. أن أينع الروض بخديه من

    عذب لماه السلسبيل قد ورد

    The garden flourished with your cheek

    With soft sweet water and blooming roses

  11. وعقرب الصدغ بروض خده

    لمجتني الورد أقامها رصد

    And the mole near your temple in the garden of your cheek

    For picking roses it stayed alert

  12. يبسم عن طلع منضد ومن

    لا لبن ومن أقاح وبرد

    Smiling with shining new teeth and some

    Not yet milk teeth, and some just emerging

  13. لا البيض منضاة ولا سمر القنا

    مشرعة تحكي له لحظاً وقد

    Neither purely white like pearls nor dark brown

    Parted lips talking to it for a moment

  14. ذا فعل ماضي لحظه في كدي

    أمضى من العضب الجراز وأحد

    If it acted in the past, its glance in rage

    Is faster than a fast horse and sharper

  15. إن جرحت عيني أديم خده

    فقد تقاضى تارةً من الكيد

    If my eyes hurt, I will blame forever

    His cheek, for it once retaliated

  16. لو قابل الشمس فمنه خجلا

    تسترت من الغمام في لبد

    If the sun met his mouth, it would shyly

    Hide itself in the clouds and fog

  17. كالشمس نور وجهه لكنه

    قد لاح للصب بدارة الأسد

    Like the sun, his face's light, but it

    Dawned upon the lover in the house of the lion

  18. كم أوعد الصب بلقياه فما

    أنجز في وعد التلاقي ما وعد

    How often the lover was promised to meet him

    Yet never fulfilled the promise of that meeting

  19. يا ناكص الصدغ على الخد به

    رسم دموعي فوق خدي المرد

    O you who turns your cheek from the mole

    The drawing of my tears upon my tossed cheek

  20. وعاطل الجيد عن الحلي ومن

    علن النضار قد تحلى بالجيد

    O you who bare your neck of jewelry

    And adorned yourself with necklaces

  21. وكاحل الطرف علام بالجفا

    كحلت أجفاني عليك بالسهد

    O eyelashes heavily darkened with kohl

    I darkened my eyelids for you with wakefulness

  22. أمال منك الدل خوط بانةٍ

    كالصعدة السمراء زانها الميد

    I hoped you would show me affection—lines

    Like black moles adorned with beauty marks

  23. ومالكي في مذهب الحب أرى

    من جعفر المذهب أهداني الرشد

    You, my master in the path of love—I see

    Ja'far's guidance has granted me righteousness

  24. جد لنيل المكرمات فانتقى

    لئالئ العلم ومن جد وجد

    Make effort to attain glorious deeds

    And choose the pearls of knowledge and effort

  25. بجده وجده نال المنى

    فساد كل الخلق في جد وجد

    Through his effort he attained wishes

    Excelling all mankind through effort and labor

  26. خلفك عنه يا مباريه فقد

    أصبح عنك مالكاً أقصى الأمد

    You left it, O Pride! For it

    Became under you lasting to the maximum

  27. معوذاً بقل هو اللضه أحد

    من شر كل حاسد إذا حسد

    Taking refuge in the heart that is the essence of the Beloved

    From the evil of every envier when he envies

  28. ثبت يدا حاسده وقد لوت

    بجيده اللوماء حبل من مسد

    Fix the envier's hand for it has blamed

    With its twisted rope made of palm fiber

  29. لا عجب أن فاخر الخلق فمن

    بحر العلوم علمه قد استمد

    No wonder the most eminent of people is one who

    From the sea of knowledge his knowledge drew

  30. اقر عين المكرمات أمه

    وقلما تقر عيناً في ولد

    Give joy to the eye of his noble mother

    Rarely is a mother's eye joyous for her son

  31. أصعده اللَه لأعلى رتبةٍ

    لو رام أدناه الهلال ما صعد

    May God elevate him to the highest rank

    If the crescent moon sought to lower him, it would not ascend

  32. قد ورث العلياء عن أكارمٍ

    تسالموها بينهم يداً بيد

    He inherited from the noblest ancestors

    Hand in hand, they pass it between them

  33. نماك للمجد الأثيل معشر

    فلا يدانيهم إلى المجد أحد

    You grew for eternal glory, O Family

    None can match you in glory

  34. يا أسرة المجد ضفت عليكم

    مطارف ينسجها البشر جدد

    O Family of Glory! I bestowed upon you

    Fine virtues that mankind perpetually make anew

  35. فناؤكم لدى الوفود كعبةً

    على سواها الوفد قط ما وفد

    Your courtyard for delegations is like the Kaaba

    No delegation ever went to any but it

  36. سحب أيادي فضلكم على الورى

    تصوب لكن صوبها إلى الأبد

    Your hands' generosity upon mankind

    Take aim—but aim it for all time

  37. تخير اللَه علا محمد

    خير عمادٍ لكم ومعتمد

    May God choose above all Muhammad

    The best pillar for you, and your reliance

  38. فاستمسكوا منه بأقوى حجةٍ

    تفحم في بيانها الخصم الألد

    So hold tight to the strongest proof from him

    That will silence the most hostile opponent

  39. من قاسه في غيره علماً فقد

    قاس ندى البحر المحيط بالثمد

    Whoever compares another's knowledge to him

    Has compared the dew of the endless sea to a little water

  40. وذو يراع درر العلم به

    تنظمت من عبد ما كانت بدد

    One who tends the pearls of knowledge

    Its ornamentations from an unfettered soul emanated

  41. يراعة بالعلم قط قدها

    فللعدا يشتمها قد وقد

    Never has any soul tended it with knowledge

    So for the enemies to insult it they feigned

  42. تمسك الطرس بمسك لفظها

    كأنها تكتب في مسك وند

    It holds on to the purity of its words

    As if written in musk and seal rings

  43. قومها الفكر وكانت خوناً

    لا عوجاً فيها ولا فيها أود

    Its thought straightened it though it was deviant

    No crookedness within it or bend

  44. أيا مقيم راية العلم علاً

    فذاك من عن نصرة الدين قعد

    O you who raise the flag of knowledge high

    That is one who has refrained from supporting religion

  45. جريت للعلم جواداً وكبا

    كما انتبهت للمعالي ورقد

    You raced to knowledge like a thoroughbred

    As you woke up to the most sublime and dreamed

  46. مسالك العلم إذا ما درست

    شرحت في الدين مسالكاً جدد

    If the paths of knowledge are tread

    They explain in religion newly opened paths

  47. في علمك الناس سواء شرع فكل

    صادٍ من معانيه ورد

    Your knowledge made people equal in law so everyone

    Who tried grasped some of its meanings

  48. دوموا بعيش ناعمٍ مقبل

    مدى الزمان لم يدنسه أحد

    Live an easy, blessed life

    That no one in all time has blemished
