حرّكي شاعراً سوايَ يغنِّي

أنا ضيّعتُ يا بنةَ الروض لحني

Awaken a poet in me to sing,

I have lost, O damsel of the garden, my tune.

وأعدِّي لغيريَ الخمرَ والكَأْ

سَ، فإني حطّمتُ كأسي ودنِّي

And prepare for others wine and drink,

For I have shattered my cup and vat.

طُوِيَتْ من صحائفِ العمر إحدى

وثلاثون بين هَمٍّ وحزن

One of the pages of life has folded,

Between worries and sorrow thirty and one.

ومضى الطيفُ هارباً وتلاشتْ

لمحةٌ في الدجى تُراود جفني

The apparition has fled and has vanished,

A glance in the darkness visiting my eyelids.

حلمٌ كابتسامة الطفل دنيا

من أمانيَّ بعْتُها بيعَ غَبْن

A dream like the smile of an infant, fleeting,

Of my wishes I have sold for loss and fraud.

اسأليني عن الحياة يُجِبْكِ الشْـ

ـشَيبُ عن مصرع الشبيبة منّي

Ask me of life, and grey hair will answer you

About the death of youth within me.

واقرئي هذه التجاعيدَ في الوَجْـ

ـهِ تُحدِّثْكِ بالحقائق عني

And read these wrinkles in the face,

They will tell you the facts about me.

علقَتْ بالحياة نفسيَ طفلاً

حين سوَّتْ يدُ الطبيعة غصني

My soul clung to life as a child

When nature's hand formed my branch.

ثم ألفيتُها تروم انطلاقاً

حين مرّتْ من الشباب بسجن

Then I found it seeking escape

When youth passed through its prison.

هي بالأمس كالفراشة في الرَّوْ

ضِ تحب الجمالَ في كل فنّ

Yesterday it was like a butterfly in the garden

Loving beauty in every art.

وهي اليومَ كالعناكب باتت

تنسج الموتَ باتِّئادٍ وتبني

Today it has become like spiders

Weaving death with pillows and buildings.

يا بنةَ الروض لا تطيلي عتابي

ودعيني مُوَكَّلاً بحسابي

O damsel of the garden, do not prolong my rebuke,

Leave me entrusted with my account.

اتركيني أطارد الأمل العذْ

بَ لعلي أراه خلف الضباب

Let me chase fanciful hope,

That I might see it behind the clouds.

أيَّ شيء من الدروس أفدنا

بعد جهد العقول والأعصاب

What lessons have we gained

After the effort of minds and nerves?

نألف السُّهْدَ في الظلام كأنا

قد حَدَبْنا على النُّضار المذاب

We befriend serenity in darkness as if

We have gazed upon limpid nectar.

ونرى السامر المحبَّب ليلاً

ساعة تنقضي حيال كتاب

And we see the enchanting reveler at night

For an hour that flies by a book.

ثم جئنا وفي المقاييس نقصٌ

ونظام الحياة رَثُّ الإهاب

Then we came with deficiencies in measures

And the system of life is shabby and torn.

فإذا قبضة الشباب هباء

وإذا العمر كومةٌ من تراب

So the fist of youth is illusion

And lifetime is a pile of dust.

أدرك القصدَ من رأيناه بالأمـ

ـسِ صغيراً يلهو مع الأتراب

I understood the purpose of what we saw yesterday

As a child playing with peers.

وخسرنا وما خسرنا لشيء

غير ظلٍّ من التقاليد كابي

And we lost without losing anything

Except shadows of stale traditions.

فإذا نحن في الطريق نجوب الـ

ـقَفْر والشمسُ ترتمي بلعاب

So we are on the road traversing the desert

As the sun spills its saliva.

تارة نعبد الهياكل أربا

باً وأخرى نطوف بالأنصاب

Sometimes worshipping temples blindly

And other times circling idols.

يا بنة الروض لا تثيري بنَجْوا

كِ عَقابيلَ دائيَ المكبوتِ

O damsel of the garden, do not raise with your coquetry

Adversities of my suppressed chronic pain.

ودعي هذه القوافلَ تسْري

في ظلام الدجى بلا خِرِّيت

Leave these caravans passing

In the darkness of night without guide.

إنها كالنجوم لاتعرف القْصْـ

ـد، ولم تدرِ غاية التوقيت

They are like the stars knowing no purpose,

Unaware of the time or destination.

غير أن النجوم ترشدُ في الليـ

ـلِ، وهذي تسعى إلى التشتيت

Except the stars give guidance in the night,

While they roam aimlessly chaotic .

سَبِحتْ في الخيال والليلُ منها

بَيَّتَ الشرَّ أيَّما تَبْييت

They swam in fantasy and the night clothed

The evil in them however it dressed.

وأبت أن تجيب داعية المن

طقِ، أو أن تُصيخ للتَّبْكيت

They refused to answer the voice of purpose,

Or listen to the call for crying.

هي في البحر والسفينة رهنُ الْـ

ـمَوْج لو كان في السفينة نوتي

They are at sea and the ship is at the mercy of waves

If only there was a captain in the ship.

قَنَعَتْ بالقليل في شظَف العيـ

ـشِ، وباتت على يسير القوت

They settled for little in dire poverty,

And spent the night with minimal food.

وبَنَتْ حولها في الوهم أشكا

لاً، وظنَّتْه شامخاتِ البيوت

Around them in illusion they built

Castles they imagined towering structures.

غَرَّها الأمس والبليةُ في الأْمْـ

ـسِ، ومافيه من خيالٍ مقيت

Deceived by yesterday and the affliction to come,

With its detestable imagination.

فمضتْ تطلب الثناء جزافاً

وتنادي بكاذبات النعوت

So they went on seeking praise arbitrarily

And proclaiming false attributes.

يا بنةَ الروض في الجوانح داءٌ

لم تُطِقْ حملَه ولو بعضَ ساعهْ

O damsel of the garden, in my heart there is a disease

You could not bear even for an hour.

قد كفى من مهازل الدهر أني

كلَّ يوم أرى لقلبي انصداعَه

It is enough of the pitfalls of fate that

Each day I see my heart torn apart.

بين أمسي المضاعِ واليوم حربٌ

ليس تنفكُّ للشَّوى نزّاعَه

Between my fading past and today there is war

With endless worries and conflicts.

بدعةٌ في الحياة أنِّيَ أشكو

كلَّ آنٍ من الخطوب ابتداعه

It is an oddity of life that I complain

Each moment of newfound troubles.

فاز في معرِض الرَّغائب قوم

لم يعدُّوا سوى النفاقِ بضاعه

Those who mastered hypocrisy have won

In the market of wishes and desires.

جبناءُ النفوس إلا صراخاً

قد أحالوه في الطباع شجاعه

The cowardly of souls except their screaming

They have made courage in their nature.

وخسرنا لأننا ما عَرَفنا

لغةَ الذئب أو ألفنا طباعه

And we lost because we did not know

The language of wolves or learn their nature.

أنفسٌ همها الملذّات في العَيْ

شِ، وأخرى بجنبها ملتاعه

Some souls preoccupied with pleasures of life,

While others next to them their tools.

يا بنة الروض ما أرى ليَ لحْناً

غيرَ هذا الذي أطلت استماعه

O damsel of the garden, I see no tune for me

Except this one whose listening I prolonged.

إن للقلبِ بين جَنْبيَّ نَزْعاً

فدعيه ولا تُطيلي نزاعَه

In my core there is a conflict

Leave it be, and do not prolong its struggle.
