1. نبأ حرك آلاما ووجدا

    في بقايا أنفس تحمل ادا

    A news that shook sorrows and found

    In the remnants of souls bearing grief

  2. بين شك ويقين لم تجد

    فيه من ميل إلى التفنيد بدا

    Between doubt and certainty, it found

    No inclination in it towards refutation

  3. لا تيه أو هي قد أدركت

    وقعه في نزعه أخذا وردا

    Not lost or it had perceived

    Its impact in its intention, taking and giving

  4. لا ظبا البيض ولا حز المدى

    منه في تمزيقها أقطع حدا

    Neither the white antelope of the plain nor the terrain of the distance

    From it in its shredding, more cutting

  5. حال ما بين فؤادي ونهى

    ثائرا يختز في ما يلقى مجدا

    A state between my heart and its desire

    Rebellious, gaining in what it faces glory

  6. نزل الأمر فهل أعددت صبرا

    وطغى الحزن فهل مسيت جلدا

    The matter came down, so have you prepared patience

    And grief prevailed, so have you touched perseverance

  7. ما لنفسي من صديق كالأسى

    يصدق الوعد ولا ينكث عهدا

    What friend does my soul have like sorrow

    That fulfills its promise and does not break its covenant

  8. قلت إذا لطف من أحلامه

    وهنا أوسعت من يهواك صدا

    I said: When its dreams are kind

    And here I have widened the echo of your love

  9. رب ذكرى كلما شط النوى

    برحها ينسيك أحبابا وعهدا

    O memory whenever the intent was active

    With its comfort, it makes you forget loved ones and covenant

  10. أحد الأمرين إما أنت خدني

    مكرما أو لازما بي يتعدا

    One of two matters, either you have betrayed me

    Honoring me or sticking with me excessively

  11. أو فراق وسلاف الموت أحلى

    موردا لي منك أو أصدق ودا

    Or separation - and the drink of death is sweeter

    To me than you - or more truthful affection

  12. فرمى السهم فاصمى وله

    غرض الرامي ولي أن أتصدى

    So the arrow was shot and it hit me while for it

    Is the purpose of the archer, and mine is to resist

  13. أي سهم مزق الموت به

    أكبد أحرى وأي الناس أردى

    What arrow has the death torn with it

    More anguished liver and which people are more hostile

  14. يوم قالوا مات سعد ضعضعوا

    أرسخ الاعلام والأوتاد هدا

    The day they said Saad died, they shook

    The firmest pillars and pegs

  15. وطغى الوادي نحيبا وهمى

    غيث دمع أزعج الأفلاك رعدا

    And the valley overflowed with weeping, and its affliction

    A downpour of tears that disturbed the planets with its thunder

  16. هزة في الشرق والغرب ضحى

    لم تدع للشمس عند الصبح رأدا

    A shake in the east and west at dawn

    That left no radiance for the sun at sunrise

  17. جزع الشرق على الشمس أسى

    خط للافاق للأنجم لحدا

    The east lamented the sun's sorrow

    Drawing for the horizons and stars a limit

  18. أخذت عهدا مع النجم فما

    ينجلي إن لم يجد في الأفق سعدا

    I took a covenant with the star so it does not

    Get clear if it does not find Saad in the horizon

  19. أتراها في صعود أخذت

    موثقا في المرتقى ألا تردى

    Do you see it in its ascension has taken

    A foothold on the rise - does it not fall

  20. كم تدهدى بين طيات الفضا

    كالكرى والدهر باق لا يدهدى

    How it glitters between the folds of space

    Like a planet while time remains lasting, not decaying

  21. قرأت من حكمت الغيب سطور

    وانطوت في فطرة الخلق عبدا

    I read from the wisdom of the unseen, lines

    And delved into the nature of creation, a servant

  22. لم يمت سعد ولكن هزة

    غادرت خضراء وادى النيل جردا

    Saad did not die but a shake

    That left the Nile valley green, deserted

  23. لم يمت سعد ولكن ضربة

    برءت من تهمة القتل عمدا

    Saad did not die but a blow

    That turned away from the accusation of deliberate killing

  24. لم يمت سعد ولكن وثبة

    مهدت في الخلد للراحل مهدا

    Saad did not die but a leap

    That paved in eternity a bed for the departed

  25. لم يمت سعد ولكن حمرة

    لمست جسم أبي الهول فقدا

    Saad did not die but a redness

    That touched the body of the Sphinx so it was lost

  26. حمرة إذ سودت بيض الدمى

    أحرقت منها الشوى وجها وخدا

    A redness that when it blackened the white statues

    It burned from it the flames, its face and cheek

  27. ويلة الموت الذي عاجله

    مستبدا لم يصارع مستبدا

    Alas, the death that hastened him

    Oppressively, did not confront an oppressor

  28. نجم سعد كلما قالوا خبا

    في ثراه ملأ الآفاق وقدا

    Saad's star, whenever they said it waned

    In his grave, it filled the horizons and rekindled

  29. بعث التعليم روحا ويدا

    أن خبا في حادث أوراه وندا

    Education revived a soul and a hand

    That if it waned in an incident he showed it activity

  30. وحمي العدل خطيبا مدرها

    عرف الواجب والحق فأدى

    And the justice of his speech stirred it

    He knew duty, right and fulfilled it

  31. ونضاه فيصلا يسطع نورا

    قاطع الضربات لا يهمل حا

    And his justice shone light

    Cutting strikes, not neglecting a confidant

  32. ينسج الأبراد بردا للتقى

    ضافي الذيل وللأوطان بردا

    Weaving safeguards of piety

    Repelling harm and for homelands, safeguards

  33. وبني الشورى دروعا سردة

    بيد داود أو أبدع سردا

    And building the council shields consecutively

    With the hand of David or excelling in arrays

  34. حاطها من عابث أن يأتمر

    برداها بشبا الأقلام بردا

    He protected it from any frivolous one commanding

    Its safeguards with youthful pens, safeguards

  35. بدفاع يمل البيد رجالا

    وهجوم يملأ البطحاء جردا

    With defense that fills the open plain with men

    And attack that fills the lowlands with cavalry

  36. يركب الصعب إلى أمثاله

    لا إلى الراحة إلا حين أودى

    He rides the difficult to its like

    Not to comfort except when brought down

  37. ترسل السهم ويلقى مثله

    ليس بالكرار أن لم يلق ندا

    You shoot the arrow and it meets its match

    It is not returning unless it meets a peer

  38. لا أرى سعدا سوى أعماله

    فانشدوا فيها إذا مصرا وسعدا

    I do not see Saad except through his deeds

    So chant in them, if Egypt and Saad

  39. فارق الدنيا إلى منزلة

    تتعالى كبرة عن أن تحدى

    He left the world to an abode

    Lofty, too great to be confined

  40. هبطت من أرفع فيها العلا

    فهى أوجه من سما الأرض استردا

    It descended from the highest in it exalted

    So it is higher than the heaven of earth, seeking highness

  41. وتعالت نفسه في خلدها

    وتعالى في الثرى جسما ولحدا

    And his soul ascended in its eternity

    And ascended in the earth a body and a grave

  42. قدك يا دهر فكم أم لها

    أمل نالته من عندك عندا

    Take that O time, so how many a hope for it

    Has it attained from you, a position

  43. أنت للناس أب خير همو

    مقرف من شرهم أخبث ولدا

    You are to the people a goodly, worried father

    Disgusted by their evil, most wicked child

  44. من يقاضيك ومن لم يحتكم

    لك يستعدى بك الخصم الألدا

    Who can dispute you? And who has not appealed

    To you, the adversary seeks the harsh opponent through you

  45. دورة الأرض على أقطابها

    كالرحى طحنا وكالمنجل حصدا

    The cycle of earth on its axes

    Like the grindstone, grinding, and like the sickle, reaping

  46. تتذى منا رفاقا ودما

    لا يزال الدهر منها يتردى

    You lose from us friends and blood

    Time does not cease slipping from them

  47. أضمرت كيدا فما تقنع أخذا

    من أعاليها ولا تقبل ردا

    You plotted evil, so you are not content with taking

    From its heights, nor do you accept a rebuttal

  48. أسرعت في سيرها سعدا ونحسا

    ليتها دارت بنا عكسا وطردا

    You hastened in your course Saad and misfortune

    If only you turned against us the opposite and expulsion

  49. ما عليها لو ونت فاستروحت

    حيلة أن يسترد الشرق سعدا

    What is upon it if it were to return and rest

    A trick so the East regains Saad

  50. سرحة الوادي التي من أمها

    مستظللا أم بعد ألغى رشدا

    The lounge of the valley which from its mother

    Shaded or after the sane turned insane

  51. هبطت من جنة الخلد على

    شاطيء النيل فطابت فيه خلدا

    It descended from the paradise of immortality upon

    The bank of the Nile so it flourished therein forever

  52. ألبستها الشمس من آصالها

    حللا فانبسطت بانا ورندا

    The sun dressed it from its rising places

    With garments, so it spread confident and gentle

  53. سلب الإكليل منها زهرة

    يتباهى والدراري منه حردى

    The bouquet took from it a flower

    That prides itself and from it the young gazelles fled

  54. يصبح الناس جموعا حولها

    أو فرادي يسبق الأشياخ مردا

    People in the morning gather around it

    Or individually, the elders outpacing the youth

  55. يتساقون الأحاديث التي

    هي كالراح وأحلى منه وردا

    Passing on the talks which

    Are like comfort and sweeter than it, a bouquet

  56. أنعش الناس مراح عندها

    وهداهم في دياجي الظلم مغدى

    It revived the people's spirits beside it

    And guided them in the pitch darkness of the night, resting place

  57. هي ظل لندامي روضة

    نبتت شوكا على العادي ووردا

    It is a shadow for the remorseful meadow

    Where thorns grew for the wayfarer and a bouquet

  58. كان ظلا كلما امتد له

    أمل في الشدة النكراء مدا

    It was a shadow whenever hope stretched to it

    In dire need, it found support

  59. إن طغى في الشرق سيل جارف

    في عوادي الغرب لاقى منه سدا

    If a raging flood overwhelmed the East

    In the meadows of the West it met from it a dam

  60. أطمع الغاصب في استعباده

    أمته في كيدها الغاصب جدا

    The usurper coveted enslaving

    Its nation, but the usurper was most zealous against it

  61. إن في الوادي خلايا نحلها

    دوايا يقذف دون الصاب شهدا

    For in the valley are the hives of its bees

    Homes where below the pond it pours honey

  62. جن باستقلاله واهتجاجه

    حب سعد لا هوى هند وسعدى

    It brewed with its independence and fervor

    The love of Saad not the passion of Hind and Saadi

  63. كنت فيهم فيلقا في فيلق

    قائدا للنصر قد أعددت جندا

    You were among them a brave horseman

    A leader of victory who prepared an army

  64. كنت قسا في أياد ذائد

    عن حمى الدستور والنيل المفدى

    You were harsh in the hands of one deterring

    The sanctuary of the constitution and the ransomed Nile

  65. تبعث النور فتستعبد حرا

    ضارى الوثبة أو تطلق عبدا

    You send light so you subjugate the free

    Fierce in its leap or release a slave

  66. مصرت عدنان فيك مضرة

    في نزار واصطفت منك معدا

    You persisted as a Mudar in it harmful

    And you chose from it a Ma'add ally

  67. فإذا شئت ملأت الأفق زهرا

    وإذا شئت ملأت الأرض جندا

    So if you wished you filled the horizon with flowers

    And if you wished you filled the land with an army

  68. يا نجوم الأرض تبكي فلكا

    كان فيها من نجوم الأفق أهدى

    O stars of earth that weep for a sky

    That had from the stars of the horizon more guidance

  69. قد توارى فتوارت خلفه

    لا نرى أو ان عين الشمس رمدا

    It disappeared so behind it disappeared

    We do not see or the eye of the sun winked

  70. وهوت يوم هوى فانكدرت

    لم نجد من بعده سلوى فبعدا

    And it fell the day it fell, so the horizons clouded

    We did not find after it any consolation so separation

  71. كيف لا تقضي وقد قالوا قضى

    وهو بالتيجان والأملاك يفدى

    How can it not judge when they said "It has judged"

    And it, by crowns and realms, is ransomed

  72. يا دموع الشرق فيضى انهرا

    عند بحر لأنني جزرا ومدا

    O tears of the East, pour rivers

    At the sea's edge for I am peninsulas and tide

  73. هل ترى الشرق وهل أدرك سرا

    كان كالصارم إرهاقا وغمدا

    Do you see the East and perceive a mystery

    That was like the sword, fatiguing and sheathed

  74. راشدا أو ناهضا أو قاصرا

    عند رأى الغرب لا يبلغ رشدا

    Rightly-guided, or ardent, or falling short

    Against the view of the West, not reaching maturity

  75. إذ توارى يوم نفي ما توارى

    وتبدى يوم عود ما تبدى

    When it disappeared the day what disappeared

    And appears the day what appears

  76. يحتبى كالليث أني يحتبى

    في عرين البيت يستقبل أسدا

    It hides like a lion, where does it hide

    In the lair of the house, facing a lion

  77. يبتغي حرية المشرق طرا

    من مغير لازم غال تعدى

    Seeking freedom for the Orient earnestly

    From an eternal companion who exceeded his limit

  78. مصر يا مصر وما أحلاك ذكرى

    عند طير الروض والأدزهار تندى

    Egypt, O Egypt, and how sweet is your memory

    Beside the birds of the garden and flowers that sway

  79. ما على قومك ان صار لهم

    سيد الأحرار من أجلك عبدا

    No blame upon your people if for them

    Became the master of the free from you a slave

  80. صفحة التاريخ والمجد التي

    سكر الدهر بها وصفا وحمدا

    The page of history and glory that

    Time glorified with it, describing and praising

  81. تصفع القائل عنها مرجفا

    اننا نعبد بعد الله فردا

    It slaps the one saying about it confused

    That we worship after God an individual

  82. وسلوا التاريخ والحق الذي

    أعطيت أو أخذت في الحق جهدا

    And ask history and the truth which

    You gave or took in truth, striving

  83. بالغوا في طمسها نشرا وطيبا

    وابتغوا من قتلها حلا وعقدا

    Exaggerate in blotting it out, publication, and purity

    And seek from killing it a solution and contract

  84. ولدتها حرة وثابتة

    بوأتها عند بيض الهند مهدا

    It was born free, steadfast

    She placed it when the Indians' dawn cradle

  85. ألزمتها الحق والدين الذي

    لم يبح للحر أن يرتد عبدا

    She obliged it to the truth and religion that

    Did not permit the free to revert to being a slave

  86. يا صروحاً أخذ العز سنا

    بالعوالي والصفاح السمر عهدا

    O edifices which glory took

    To the peaks and rugged hills the brown covenant

  87. كم فقدنا منك في هذا الحمى

    كابرا عز على العلياء فقدا

    How much we lost in it in this sanctuary

    The mighty, hard to replace if lost

  88. وبكينا خادرا مستوثبا

    فيك يوم الحرب كالضاري وأعدى

    And we cried over it vanished, pouncing

    Upon you on the day of war like the predator and more hostile

  89. غاب سعد فملأوا الغاب ظبى

    واملأوا الأدغال أشبالا وأسدا

    Saad vanished so they filled the absence with antelopes

    And filled the thickets with cubs and lions

  90. يا شباب النيل يا أسد الشرى

    العوالي لم تكن تجلى لتصدى

    O youth of the Nile, O lion of lofty

    Places, you were not revealed to resist

  91. أقسموا أن تقتدوا أو تأخذوا

    بالذي أبقاه من دين ومبدا

    Swear that you will follow or take

    What he left of religion and doctrine

  92. خير يومى مصر يوم أنجبت

    بطلا يبنى لها عزا ومجدا

    The best of Egypt's days is the day it begot

    A hero who builds for it might and glory

  93. عبرة الزائر قبرا سنة

    بعده قد أصبحت فرضا يؤدى

    The pilgrim's lesson, a year after him

    A grave that has become an obligatory duty

  94. طوفوا من حوله واستلموا

    ركنه ثم أخشعوا وفدا فوفدا

    Circulate around it and touch

    Its corner then be most devout, delegation after delegation

  95. والزموا الصمت عسى أن تسمعوا

    حكمة من صمته نعشا ولحدا

    And adhere to silence, perhaps you may hear

    Wisdom from its silence, a bier and a grave
