God tended a flower of carnation kin

Whose scent told of a love and radiant cheek

And stalk shot up in lofty aloofness

As my beloved was aloof to love's entreaty

When the boughs in a garden lean down, I yearn

To embrace each twig longing for his form

And when the soft wind stirs, I swoon outright

And love the fragrance from his dewy skin
