They brought me a bright lantern, radiant

Like the cheek of my beloved, and the sweetness of his breath.

They brought it from a lofty, aloof place—

The aloofness of that gazelle in the shade of its shelter.

May God protect a lover made bashful

By a flower whose beauty told of the charm of its companion.

And if the fluttering breeze blew a waft

Its fragrance recounted a pleasing tale of well-being.
