1. أي عزٍ مضى من الإسلام

    أي ركنٍ أضحى حديث انهدام

    What glory has departed from Islam!

    What pillar has now become a tale of collapse!

  2. ذاق موتاً محمد بن طغج

    هو ليث الشرى وغيث الغمام

    Muhammad ibn Tughj has tasted death;

    he was the lion of the wilds, the rain of the clouds.

  3. فقد الناس مولى الإنعام

    فهم سائمون كالأنعام

    The people have lost the lord of beneficence,

    and now they wander like grazing cattle.

  4. مات رب العلا وراعي الرعايا

    والسرايا وكافل الأيتام

    Dead is the lord of high estate, shepherd of subjects

    and squadrons, protector of orphans.

  5. أين ما كنت فيه من عزك البا

    ذخ والمرتقى عزيز المرام

    Where is the lofty splendor of the power you once possessed,

    the eminence whose height was hard to attain?

  6. أين ذاك الحجاب والملك والهيـ

    ـبة أين الزحام وقت الزحام

    Where are that seclusion, sovereignty, and awe—

    —where is the throng when crowds pressed close?

  7. من أميرٍ وقائدٍ وخطيرٍ

    ورئيسٍ وماجدٍ وهمام

    Where are the prince, the commander, the man of consequence,

    the chief, the noble, and the valiant lord?

  8. كلهم مطرقٌ لديك من الهيـ

    ـبة خوف الإجلال والإعظام

    All bowed their heads before you from awe—

    —from fear born of reverence and veneration.

  9. أين تلك الخيام حولك إن عر

    ست والأسد حول تلك الخيام

    Where are those tents about you, where once encamped

    lions, with the Lion amid those tents?

  10. من عديد وعدةٍ لك ما بيـ

    ـن قعودٍ فيها وبين قيام

    Where are your multitude and your arms, between—

    those sitting there and those standing?

  11. لم يطق جمعهم دفاع الردى عنـ

    ـك ولم يمنعوك منع اعتصام

    Their host could not ward death away from—

    you, nor protect you with the shelter of a stronghold.

  12. أسلمتك الخيول قسراً وقد كنـ

    ـت عليها سوراً على الإسلام

    The horses yielded you up by force, though once—

    upon them you were Islam’s rampart.

  13. خانك السيف وهو يصدر عن أمـ

    ـرك مستعدياً بغير احتجام

    The sword betrayed you, though at your command it went forth—

    to attack without restraint.

  14. خذل الرمح وهو عونك لو حا

    ن لقاءٌ وثار نقع قتام

    The spear failed you, though it was your aid whenever

    battle came and black dust rose.

  15. لم ترد القسى عنك سهام الـ

    ـحتف والحتف عندها في السهام

    The bows did not turn from you the arrows of—

    death; and death itself lay there among the arrows.

  16. ما وقتك الحراب حرب المنايا

    حين وافاك جيشها من أمام

    The spears did not shield you in the war with doom

    when its army came upon you from the front.

  17. لم يحصنك ما اقتنيت من الآ

    لات من جوشن ولا من لام

    None of the gear you had amassed could fortify—

    you: neither cuirass nor coat of mail.

  18. حكم الموت فيك من بعد ما كنـ

    ـت ترى حاكماً على الحكام

    Death passed judgment on you, after once—

    you were seen passing judgment upon rulers.

  19. فقدتك الفسطاط وجداً مدى الدهـ

    ـر ومن بعدها بلاد الشام

    Fustat has lost you, grieving through all time—

    and after it, the lands of Syria.

  20. فجعت يثربٌ ومكة والبيـ

    ـت إلى زمزمٍ أجل والمقام

    Yathrib is bereaved, and Mecca, and the Sacred—

    House—yes, and Zamzam and the Station.

  21. عم فيك المصاب فاشترك العا

    لم في الرزء منه والآلام

    The calamity over you spread, and all the world

    shared its affliction and its pain.

  22. حسبنا الله من عزٍ من حكمٍ يجـ

    ـري على الحاكمين بالأحكام

    God is enough for us against the force of a decree that runs—

    even over rulers, enforcing its judgments.

  23. كل شيءٍ إلى زوالٍ ومن ذا

    نال ملك الدنيا بغير اخترام

    Everything passes away; and who has ever

    gained the kingdom of this world without being cut short?

  24. أين أين الملوك في سالف الد

    هر دهتم حوادث الأيام

    Where, where are the kings of ages

    past? The assaults of time befell them.

  25. أين من قد كانوا يخافون في البأ

    س ويرجون للعطايا الجسام

    Where are those once feared in might—

    and looked to for magnificent gifts?

  26. ليس يبقى إلا الإله تعالى

    من له الملك ثابتاً بالدوام

    Nothing endures save God Most High,

    whose kingdom alone stands everlasting.

  27. أيهذا الأمير بل يا أبا القا

    سم يا بن السميدع القمقام

    O prince—rather, O Abu al-Qa—

    —sim, son of the dauntless, towering chief:

  28. ارض حكم الإله في الحكم الما

    ضي وسلم لنافذ الأحكام

    accept God’s decree in the judgment already

    passed, and submit to the commands that must take effect.

  29. وهناك الذي بلغت من الأم

    ر وما حزته بحسن انتظام

    Before you lies the authority you have attained,

    and what you have won through sound governance.

  30. ما كمثل الذي رزئت ولا مثـ

    ـل الذي قد ملكت في ذا العام

    No loss is like the loss you suffered, nor any—

    realm like that over which you ruled this year.

  31. أنت مثل الإخشيد فانهض بما ملـ

    ـكت بالجد منك والاعتزام

    You are like al-Ikhshid: rise to what you—

    rule, with earnestness and resolve.
