لا تلوموا عليه قلبَ مُحِبٍّ

فجميع القلوبِ طَوْعُ يَدَيْهِ

Do not blame a loving heart

For all hearts are under his control

لا تظنّوا عِذاره طرّز الخدّ

فما كان ذا افتقاراً إليه

Do not think his excuse adorned his cheek

For he had no need of it

إنما لحظُه أَراق دماءً

وبدا أُثْرها على وَجْنَتَيْه

His glance shed blood

And its traces appeared on his cheeks

فرأى وَردَها بقتليَ نمّا

ماً فأَوْلى بنفسَجاً عارِضَيْه

So he saw her rose had bloomed

With a complexion like the water lily

فتيقنتُ أنني ضاع ثأْري

حين لم يبق شاهدٌ لي عليه

So I was sure my vengeance was lost

When no witness to him remained

تودُّون عَوْدي لو قَدَرِتْ إِليكم

وقد أَبْعَد المِقْدار في الَبْين شُقِتّي

You wish my return if I could reach you

But destiny has made my misery remote

كأَنّيَ سَهْمٌ كلّما جرّني الهوى

إِليكم رمتْني الحادثات فأَقصتِ

I am like an arrow whenever love drew me

Towards you, events have cast me far away

كأَني سأَلتُ الرّيح عن لين قَدِّها

فهزّت قضيبَ البان لي حين هَبَّتِ

I am like one who asked the wind about its softness

And it shook the crook when it blew

له سائِلاً عِلْمٍ وجود يُجيب ذا

على عَجَل منه وذا عن تَثَبُّتِ

Asking one of knowledge and existence to answer

Hastily and another to deliberate

فذا بنوالٍ للمُؤالف مُنْطِقٍ

وذا بمَقالٍ للمُخالِفِ مُسْكِت

One with words to reconcile

Another with words to disagree in silence
