وقَالوا حبُيبُكَ ذو شاربٍ

فَظِلْتُ أَرُدهمْ بِالحَلَفْ

They said, "Your beloved has a mustache,"

So I kept swearing them down.

وقلتُ لهُم بلْ هِلالٌ بَدا

فُوَيْقَ الثنايا فزَادَ الكَلفْ

And I said to them, "Nay, it's a new moon that has appeared,

Shining brightly between the cheeks," and their nonsense increased.

فقالوا وِلمْ لاحَ مُحْلوْلِكًا

وما مثلُ هذا هلالٌ عُرِفْ

So they said, "Why is your crescent then so fuzzy?

No crescent like this has ever been known."

فقلتُ الهلالُ منْ أشْراطِهِ

إذا جاوَرَ الشمْسَ أن ينكِسفْ

I said, "It's in the nature of the crescent,

That when next to the sun, it should be eclipsed."
